Common questions about loft storage

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Forestdale?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you make loft storage for a home in Forestdale?

Yes, we work across Croydon, Forestdale included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

What materials do you use for loft storage?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Stable materials suit a loft, where temperatures can vary. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

How do you get large pieces into a loft?

We measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft room. We size every section for the tightest turn, and then assembled in the loft.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

Will eaves storage block the ventilation?

A good design avoids that. At the design visit we check what’s there and leave the space it needs. We don’t alter insulation or vents.

About our loft storage in Forestdale

Behind the short walls at the edge of a loft room, there’s often space going to waste. Eaves cupboards and pull-out drawers built into the knee wall put it to work. Pull-out drawers mean you do not have to crawl in. At the design visit in Forestdale, we will see what fits. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a converted loft with no fitted furniture and nowhere to store bags and boxes.

A good share of the homes around Forestdale were built between 1945 and the early 1970s. Post-war homes normally have squarer rooms and fewer nooks than period ones, so eaves cupboards often create the storage the house never had. The fixings are chosen for the wall, whether it’s concrete, blockwork or brick.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting on site lets the storage be finished alongside the woodwork around it. It is easy to touch up later. Like any new paint, it needs time to cure fully.

Pull-out drawers

Pull-out drawers bring the back of the eaves within reach. Each one is sized for what it will hold. They suit clothes, bedding and boxes.

What it costs

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The internal fittings
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.

What to send when you get in touch

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Tips worth knowing

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer
  • Think about hanging space for a loft bedroom
  • Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces
  • Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall

When we’ve finished fitting, the cupboards and drawers are ready. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Keep tape and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.

Loft rooms can be warm in summer and cool in winter. Keep the room ventilated. That keeps the storage and the paint in good order.

Making use of awkward spaces in Forestdale

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 53% of the housing in the area around Forestdale, with about 37% built between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 42% of households in the area around Forestdale, based on Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Forestdale, as it does anywhere else in London. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.

If you live in a period home close to St Francis, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using. The wider area includes historic houses like Addington Palace, about 0.9 miles north. If your own home is a period one, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even. If you live near Addington Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Stairwells in post-war blocks can have tight turns, so the size of each section is set by the stairs as well as the lift. Where the building has a caretaker or managing agent, it helps to tell them before fitting day. Common parts are protected while we carry in.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about storage in your loft.
  2. We visit to measure and look at what’s behind the knee walls.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. Your storage is built in our workshop, shaped to the loft.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill.

Advice

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
