Your questions about wall beds in Forty Hill

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Forty Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Can you make wall beds for a home in Forty Hill?

Yes. Forty Hill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Enfield and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

It is made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.

Wall beds for homes in Forty Hill

We build the bed housing from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray painted in our workshop or hand painted. From the front, the folded bed can look like a set of tall cupboards, sitting quietly in the room. If your home has a bed that looks like cupboards by day and a living room with a bed that folds away, that is what wall beds are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Forty Hill, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic spot for fitted furniture, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. The main bedroom may have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the wall bed we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Forty Hill

In the neighbourhood around Forty Hill, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 43%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 21 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Forty Hill. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and wall beds can be designed to work around them. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. Where a home in Forty Hill is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

For a family home near Worcesters Primary School, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Forty Hall, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If you live near Enfield Town Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.

What it is made from

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters, which suits parts that carry load. The edge can be left on show or painted.

Shelves

Open shelves soften a wall of cupboards and keep it from feeling heavy.

Why bespoke in Forty Hill?

A sofa bed is cheaper and simpler, and for occasional guests that may be enough. A wall bed takes a proper mattress and gives back the floor, which can make a small room usable. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and those are common in interwar houses. Fitted furniture is made around them.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.

Honest limits

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Decorating around the cabinet
  • Supplying mattresses
  • Building work to make a wall sound

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

How fitting day works

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Wall beds arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You tell us about the room and who the bed is for.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor, as the bed must be fixed securely.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready to check.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves are made in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
