Built-in bookshelves in Gordon Hill, Enfield

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on built-in bookshelves in Gordon Hill starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Space for art books and records
  • A room lined with books
  • Empty alcoves that could hold books

Built-in bookshelves for your home in Gordon Hill

Is bespoke worth it?

Bought bookcases come in the maker’s colours. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, so they can match the walls or stand out. Ready-made pieces each bring their own height and depth, and a room full of them can look cluttered, while one fitted run looks calm and uses the space better. It can be painted to suit the room.

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Gordon Hill

Bookshelves do not have to stop at a doorway or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it, or frame a window with a seat or desk below. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. Most enquiries start with storage for children’s books and games and shelving that frames a window, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In many houses from the 1950s and 1960s, the living room has a wide window and a plain chimney breast or none at all. Many homes around Gordon Hill date from those decades, so built-in bookshelves are often planned to give the room a focal point. A run of low cupboards with shelving above can sit under or beside the window, leaving any radiator clear.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the built-in bookcase we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Gordon Hill homes and built-in bookshelves

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Gordon Hill were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 30%) and before 1919 (about 25%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Gordon Hill, Historic England’s list includes St Faith's Cottage (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and Brigadier House (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Enfield included. Vans bringing furniture to Gordon Hill fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.

For a family home near St Michael's CofE Primary School, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. For an older house near St Michael & All Angels, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If you live near Enfield Town Park, built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Gordon Hill is within the London Borough of Enfield, about 3 miles south of Edmonton. Anywhere in Gordon Hill, the process is the same: a design visit, a quote in writing, furniture made at our workshop and fitting in your home. Our Enfield coverage includes Gordon Hill and the places around it.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Honest limits

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Making good walls that can’t take fixings
  • Knocking through or altering walls
  • Decorating the rest of the room

Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Cupboards below
  • Spray-painted finish

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Decide whether you want fixed shelves, adjustable shelves or both
  • Measure your tallest and deepest books
  • Estimate how many metres of books you have
  • Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting

Leave a little air behind books on an external wall so air can move. Look out for damp signs early.

Keep heavy things on low shelves and use a step rather than the shelves to reach up.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Gordon Hill

I live near Gordon Hill station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

What keeps bookshelves from bowing under books?

Shelves are sized for their span, depth and the weight they’ll carry. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support, often in birch plywood. Tell us about heavy collections during the design visit.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, message us from the contact page.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

What happens on fitting day

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Estates sometimes have their own parking rules alongside the council’s, so let us know what applies during the design visit. On the day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You tell us about your books and the wall you have in mind.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote.
  4. We then make the bookcase in our workshop, with shelves thick enough for their span.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Ask for a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
