Built-in bookshelves in Fulham
Built-in bookshelves in Fulham: what you get
The right depth depends on your books. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. If your home has empty alcoves that could hold books and bookshelves in keeping with an older house, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often taller than in later houses, and a large share of the homes around Fulham date from then. That gives full-height built-in bookshelves room to reach the picture rail or the cornice, with the top line set to match the room’s own mouldings. Where a fireplace has been blocked up, the chimney still needs ventilating, and any damp is sorted before units go in.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

From workshop to your room
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- You get in touch about built-in bookshelves. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
- We visit to measure up, look at the wall and agree shelf depths and spacing.
- We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish, including spray or hand painting.
- The bookcase is made in our workshop, with shelves sized for their span and load.
- Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely.
Before we arrive
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Advice
Built-in bookshelves in Fulham: local notes
About 67% of the homes in the area around Fulham went up before 1919, and about 13% between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Fulham, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 67% of homes in the neighbourhood around Fulham were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Alcoves either side of a chimney breast and tall ceilings make older houses natural homes for built-in shelving.
Close to Parsons Green (park)? Built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. If you live in a period home close to St. Peter's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Near listed buildings like Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, less than half a mile north of the centre of Fulham, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.
Fulham is in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Fulham is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. In Hammersmith and Fulham, Fulham is one of the places we cover, and the borough has 16 places on our list.

Materials and finishes
Shelves
Each shelf’s depth suits its job: shallow for paperbacks, deeper for art books and records.
Birch plywood
Shelf sag depends on span, depth and load. Birch plywood is stiff, which helps long shelves stay flat.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the design visit.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Questions we are often asked
I live in a flat in Fulham. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Built-in bookshelves are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Fulham?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.
Do photos help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
Honest limits
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:
- Making good walls that cannot take fixings
- Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
- Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
