Built-in bookshelves across Hammersmith and Fulham: what to expect
A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It runs from wall to wall and, if you like, up to the ceiling, giving your books a proper home. For a home in Hammersmith and Fulham, we start with a design visit to measure the wall and talk through what the shelves will hold. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are storage for children’s books and games and empty alcoves that could hold books.
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
- We then send a quote in writing for the bookshelves.
- We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
- Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.
How our quotes work
We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Homes across Hammersmith and Fulham and their living rooms
Across Hammersmith and Fulham, from Fulham, Parsons Green and Walham Green outwards, we design and fit built-in bookshelves. Walls could be solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so fixings are chosen for each. Long shelves are sized so they don’t sag.
About 56% of the homes in Hammersmith and Fulham went up before 1919, and about 16% since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. More than half of the homes in Hammersmith and Fulham (about 56%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses of that age normally have alcoves, tall ceilings and picture rails, all of which shelving can use. About 26% of households in Hammersmith and Fulham live in flats in converted or shared houses, based on Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
In London, the route into a home matters as much as the room, so the way in is measured along with the room.
Fulham: Fulham Palace, about 0.7 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If you live near Parsons Green (park), a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.
What affects the price in Hammersmith and Fulham
Several things affect the price:
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- How big the furniture is
- The number of doors and drawers
- Spray painting or hand painting
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.
Helping us understand the room
When you contact us, these help most:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- How you want to use the space
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.
Looking after your furniture
The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:
- Mention parking and stairs when we visit
- Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
- Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide
- Check the heights of art books, files and records
Paint is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, place books gently rather than sliding them along, to avoid marking the new finish.
Store the heaviest items low down.

Shelves
Each shelf’s depth suits its job.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting lets you judge the colour in your own room. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you get in touch.
Do you need built-in bookshelves?
Some people are tired of shelves that bow and bookcases that lean. A bowing shelf is usually too thin or too long for what it carries. We plan spans and thickness so shelves stay straight.
Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:
- Wasted wall space around a door or window
- Shelves packed two rows deep
- Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
- Room for a record collection
Questions we are often asked
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
We plan the route in during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on your lease.
Do photos help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We will design around them.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?
You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness to the bookcase, and adjustable ones let the spacing change. A mix often works best.
