Bedroom storage in Fulham
Homes built before 1919 make up about 67% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Fulham, with about 13% built between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Fulham is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 26% of households in the area around Fulham, based on Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.
Fulham Palace, about 0.7 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Near listed buildings like Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, under half a mile north of the centre of Fulham, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Wall beds in Fulham
A wall bed folds up into a fitted cabinet when you don’t need it and is lowered again at night. It means a room can work as more than a bedroom, so a guest room can double as a study or playroom. We build the cabinet around the bed to suit the room and finish it to match. Typical reasons to get in touch are hiding the bed when it’s not in use and a storage wall with a bed inside; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
A large share of the homes around Fulham were built before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom, the chimney breast and its alcoves often shape the room. Fitted furniture can fill the alcoves, wrap round the chimney breast or run across a whole wall. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so the pieces are scribed to the wall and levelled at the base.
You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What affects the cost of wall beds
To work out the quote, we look at:
- How square the room is
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.
What to send when you get in touch
What helps most when you first contact us:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Approximate measurements of the space
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, message us from the contact page. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
From workshop to your room
Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
- At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
- A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
- We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
- Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.
How to prepare
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
How to get a quote
We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

FAQs: wall beds in Fulham
My home in Fulham is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
I live in a flat in Fulham. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.
Will a wall bed work on my wall?
That is something we look at when we measure. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker’s instructions set what’s needed.
How long does fitting take?
How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.
Is it time for wall beds?
Often the bed is one part of a bigger plan. Cupboards and shelving either side make the whole wall useful.
Requests we hear often include:
- A living room with a bed that folds away
- Shelves or a desk around the bed
- Hiding the bed when it’s not in use
- A flexible room for a growing family
Living in a block of flats near West Brompton station? Then wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
What to check before you book
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Real projects you can actually look at
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure

Flat-pack or bespoke?
It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
