Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Fulham

A box room is often too small for a bed but just right for a dressing room. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, leaving the bedroom with more space. We plan the layout so you can stand, turn and see everything. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are setting aside a corner of a large bedroom and a side each for a couple.

A large share of the homes around Fulham were built before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom, the chimney breast and its alcoves often shape the room. Fitted furniture can fill the alcoves, wrap round the chimney breast or run across a whole wall. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so the pieces are scribed to the wall and levelled at the base.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Honest limits

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Painting the walls of the room
  • Lighting and wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Building a new partition wall

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it is made from

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Dressing table
  • Shoe storage
  • Hanging, shelves and drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.

Questions from Fulham

Can you fit walk-in wardrobes to the uneven walls of an older house in Fulham?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Fulham?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

The furniture is built in sections. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.

Before and after fitting day

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Plan shoe storage around what you own
  • Let air move through the space
  • Decide on doors or open storage before we measure
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

Keep the room ventilated, especially if it’s on an external wall. Leave a little space behind hanging clothes, so air can circulate.

Deal with any damp before the units go in. Cooler external walls can lead to condensation, and ventilation inside the units helps.

How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. First, you tell us about the space and how you dress. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
  2. We come to measure the room and go through how the space should work, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the layout, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. Everything is made and finished in our workshop.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Getting a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

The problems walk-in wardrobes solve

Others want a dressing table built in alongside the storage. We can design a dressing table into the room next to the hanging and shoe storage.

Here’s what walk-in wardrobes can help with:

  • A walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom
  • A built-in dressing table
  • Room for a growing wardrobe
  • Long and double hanging planned around your clothes

For families living near St Johns Walham Green Church of England Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work

How to choose a carpenter in London

Walk-in wardrobes in Fulham: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 67% of the housing in the streets around Fulham, with about 13% built between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Fulham include Church of St Thomas of Canterbury (Grade II*), less than half a mile north, and Vine Cottages (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 26% of households in the streets around Fulham, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Fulham Palace, about 0.7 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. Close to Parsons Green (park)? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.
