Need built-in bookshelves in North End?
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
With off-the-shelf shelving, you are limited to the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you choose, to suit the room. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.
Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

About our built-in bookshelves in North End
Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them, whichever suits the room. Walls in older houses are rarely flat, so we scribe the edges on site. Typical reasons to get in touch are alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste and shelving that frames a window; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around North End, the living room is often two rooms knocked through, with a chimney breast in each half. One pair of alcoves might take shelves and the other cupboards, a TV or a desk. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What else we make in North End
Flats, leases and landlords
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases.
Living-room carpentry in North End: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 68% of the housing in the streets around North End, with about 11% built between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. North End is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
If your home is one of the older houses near St. Andrew's Fulham Fields, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Cuthbert and St Matthias, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a flat close to Kensington Olympia station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

- Decorating the rest of the room
- Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves
Is North End in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?
Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London, and North End is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in North End?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
Can you build bookshelves over a radiator?
It needs planning. We leave space so heat is not trapped. Moving a radiator is a plumber’s job.
Who chooses the colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you.
How fitting day works
At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

Before fitting day

- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
How to get a quote
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
