Golders Green Loft Storage
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on loft storage in Golders Green starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- Space under the eaves going to waste
- A loft room that still feels unfinished
- Nowhere to store bags and boxes

Storage in Golders Green homes: local notes
In the neighbourhood around Golders Green, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 52%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 26%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 67 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Golders Green. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 40% of households in the area around Golders Green, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
Living in a block of flats near Cricklewood station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Alban the Martyr, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

How we make loft storage for Golders Green
Dormers are a natural place for shelving or a small desk. Dormers have their own shapes, and walls that are seldom square. We scribe the furniture to follow them. It uses space that might otherwise be wasted. We’ll go through the options in Golders Green. Typical reasons to get in touch are a boarded loft with no proper shelving and standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Golders Green, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

How we price loft storage
The price for your room depends on:
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.
Before the design visit
These details help when you contact us:
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Examples of the look you’re after
- How you want to use the space
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.

Fitting day, step by step
You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
- You get in touch and let us know about the loft and the stairs up to it.
- We visit to measure the loft and the way up, including the top flight and any tight turn. Tell us about parking too, as a van often needs a permit or a paid bay.
- We send a quote in writing.
- We build the storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to get up to the loft.
- The sections go up the stairs, are assembled under the eaves and set level. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted in the loft.
How to prepare
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
How to get a quote
It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
Related advice
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Practical tips
People planning loft storage often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Mention any parking rules on your street
- Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves
- Choose a calm colour for the loft
- Empty the eaves so we can see what’s behind
A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. Keep a note of the colour for later. If anything is not right with the storage, get in touch through our contact form and we’ll talk it through.
Leave room for air to move behind the storage. Squashed insulation works less well. Damp in the eaves is worth raising with the people who did the conversion.
The problems loft storage solve
Standard wardrobes do not fit under a sloping ceiling. Bespoke wardrobes follow the slope. It’s a common need in a loft bedroom.
People typically get in touch with us about things like these:
- A dormer that is not being used
- Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
- Boxes and suitcases with no home
- A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
Heath House, about 1.1 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.
Choosing a carpenter

- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
Questions we are often asked
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Golders Green?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
My house in Golders Green is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Do you make the furniture yourselves?
Each piece is built in our workshop for the room it is going into, then brought to your home and fitted. It is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
What finishes do you offer?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Will you travel outside London?
No. We only take on work in London.
