Built-in bookshelves in Fortune Green: what you get
Shelving can frame a door or a window. A bookcase can wrap around a door, with shelves running over the top, or frame a window with a seat or desk below. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. If you’re living with shelving that works with picture rails and cornices and books piled on the floor, built-in bookshelves made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
Picture rails, deep skirting boards and plaster cornices are part of the character of older houses, and built-in bookshelves need to meet those lines neatly. Homes built before 1919 make up a large share of the housing around Fortune Green, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about at the design visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.
Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Living-room carpentry in Fortune Green: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Fortune Green were built before 1919 (about 58%) and since 2000 (about 13%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 6 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Fortune Green. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Camden included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Fortune Green. Parking and access are planned during the design visit.
Fenton House, about 0.7 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. For families living near St Luke's Church of England School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

When is bespoke worth it?
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.
Fitting day, step by step
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- You tell us about your books and the wall you have in mind.
- We come to measure and talk through depths, heights and cupboards, with the shelf spans in mind.
- A written quote follows. Read it through and ask us anything.
- We then make the bookcase in our workshop.

Questions from Fortune Green
Can you fit built-in bookshelves to the uneven walls of an older house in Fortune Green?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
My home in Fortune Green is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Can you build shelves over a doorway?
Yes. Wrapping shelves around a door or window is a good way to fill a wall. We measure the openings at the measuring visit, and we plan the shelves around the architraves.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.
Looking after your furniture
None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:
- Plan heavy items for the lower shelves
- Note the sizes of your largest books and records
- Mention parking and stairs when we visit
- Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
Leave a little air behind books on an external wall. Look out for damp signs early.
Overloading is the main cause of sagging. Mention any heavy collection you plan to add when we design the shelves, so the shelves can be sized for it.
Is it time for built-in bookshelves?
For people who work from home, the wall behind the desk matters. Shelving close to the desk keeps books and files within reach. Cupboards underneath hide printers, paper and clutter.
People normally get in touch with us about things like these:
- Wasted wall space around a door or window
- Space for art books and records
- A room lined with books
- Storage for children’s books and games
Living in a block of flats near West Hampstead Thameslink station? Then it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
Choosing a carpenter
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
- Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
Honest limits
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:
- Relocating radiators or pipework
- Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
- Redecorating, which is for your decorator
