Built-in bookshelves for your home in St Giles
Flats, leases and landlords
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you get in touch.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
Built-in bookshelves for homes in St Giles
Shelving can frame a door or a window. A bookcase can wrap around a door, with shelves running over the top, or frame a window with a seat or desk below. It makes use of wall space that is usually left bare. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about bookshelves in keeping with an older house and a room lined with books.
Around St Giles, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Houses of that age normally have a chimney breast in the front and back reception rooms, with an alcove either side, and those alcoves are the natural home for built-in bookshelves. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet, then cut neatly around the skirting and any picture rail or cornice.
The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves
Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.
Getting in touch
What helps most when you first contact us:
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
For a quote for built-in bookshelves in St Giles, use our contact form. Tell us which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, plus any rough measurements. We will arrange a design visit, then send a quote in writing.
Living-room carpentry in St Giles: local notes
About 49% of the homes in the neighbourhood around St Giles went up before 1919, and about 21% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of St Giles is in the Seven Dials (Covent Garden) Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. More than a third of the homes in the area around St Giles (about 49%) were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Alcoves either side of a chimney breast and tall ceilings make older houses natural homes for built-in shelving.
Close to St Anne's Churchyard? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. For an older house near Soho Baptist Chapel, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. For families living near St Josephs Catholic Primary School, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.
St Giles is about 1 mile north-east of St Pancras, part of the London Borough of Camden. St Giles is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. St Giles is one of the places in Camden where we make built-in bookshelves.
Postcode districts we cover here for built-in bookshelves: W1F, W1D and W1T. You will find streets here such as Duck Lane, Drury Lane and Bridle Lane, and we cover homes on all of them for built-in bookshelves. St Giles is near the A301 and A400; on busy main roads, unloading built-in bookshelves takes a little planning. We also cover Seven Dials (1 mile south), West End (1 mile south-west), Soho (1 mile south-west), Covent Garden (1 mile south-east) and Chinatown (1 mile south-west). We also make built-in bookshelves in nearby places like Hampstead (4 miles north-west), West Hampstead (4 miles north-west), Agar Town (2 miles north), Kentish Town (2 miles north), Greenhill (3 miles north-west) and Chalk Farm (2 miles north-west). As one of the bigger places in Camden, St Giles is covered for all of our fitted furniture.
Local landmarks in St Giles
Around St Giles, we cover homes near London Nautical School, The Crown pub and Mercers' School, among other places. St Giles has its own railway station: Tottenham Court Road station. Questions we’re often asked
Does a conservation area in or near St Giles affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in St Giles?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do you work in St Giles?
Yes. We work in St Giles and across Camden.
How do you decide on shelf depth?
We set the depth to suit what you own. Another option is deeper storage below and shallower shelves above.
Can you build bookshelves over a radiator?
We plan around it with care. Any shelving over or around a radiator needs room for the heat to move into the room. Moving a radiator is a plumber’s job.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.
Where other trades come in
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Decorating the rest of the room
- Electrical work, like new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Structural changes, such as taking out a chimney breast
If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What happens on fitting day
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.
- You get in touch with some details about where the bookshelves will go.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
- A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
- The sections are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
- The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.
Before we arrive
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Boards, parts and paint
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which makes it our usual choice for long or heavily loaded shelves. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.
Moisture-resistant MDF
For cupboard doors below the shelves, MDF gives a flat, stable door. It has no grain to show through.
