Is it time for fitted home offices?

Keeping work in its own space is a common wish. With doors over the desk, work can be put away at the end of the day. It helps the home feel restful after hours.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • Shelves that sag under books and files
  • Work things on show in the evening
  • An alcove or landing that could take a desk
  • No proper place to work from home

For families living near The Royal School, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

Fitted home offices in Greenhill: what you get

A good home office has a place for everything. Drawers for stationery, cupboards for files and a printer, and shelves for books and folders, so the work surface stays clear. Doors keep clutter out of sight at the end of the day. We design the storage around your work, wherever you are in Greenhill. We make home offices from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day and a guest room that’s needed for work.

Victorian and Edwardian rooms often have fewer sockets than a modern office needs, so we plan cable routes to the sockets you have. Any new sockets are for your electrician, ideally before fitting day. Since a large share of homes around Greenhill date from before 1919, it is a common thing to plan for.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Fitting day, step by step

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it helps to tell us during the design visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space you want to work in.
  2. We visit to measure the space, including any slope, alcove or uneven wall.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. In our workshop the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
  5. On fitting day each piece is set level and scribed to the walls, so there are no gaps along the edges.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once everything is in.

Before fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

FAQs: fitted home offices in Greenhill

My home in Greenhill is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Home offices are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do you cover homes near Hampstead Heath station?

Yes. We cover all of Camden and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough measurements. To send them, get in touch through our contact form.

How long is the fitting for a home office?

How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Because everything is made in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the room as tidy as possible while we work.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

What affects the cost of fitted home offices

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • How big the furniture is

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Getting in touch

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:

  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Where you live, with the postcode

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

Tips worth knowing

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Look at the window and where the light falls
  • Think about where the sockets are now
  • Consider doors to hide work at the end of the day
  • Think about the space you need to push back

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the furniture clean. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The desk edge is touched most, so give it a wipe now and then.

Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If a door drops or a drawer catches, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us.

Greenhill homes and fitted home offices

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Greenhill were built before 1919 (about 65%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 10%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Greenhill include Institute of St Marcellina (Grade I), under half a mile west, and Burgh House (Grade I), under half a mile north. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your street in Greenhill joins a main road, it is worth telling us during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

The wider area includes historic houses like 2 Willow Road, about 0.3 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. Close to Hampstead Heath? A desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.

Is bespoke worth it?

Ready-made desks rarely plan for cables. With a bespoke desk, cable routes are part of the design. It keeps things neat above and below the desk. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
