Built-in Bookshelves in Lee

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on built-in bookshelves in Lee starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Bare walls that could hold shelving
  • Books with nowhere left to go
  • Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices

Built-in bookshelves in Lee: what you get

Built-in shelving fills a wall, an alcove or a whole room, and is made for that space. It can run wall to wall and up to the ceiling. For a home in Lee, we start with a design visit to measure the wall and talk through what the shelves will hold. Typical reasons to get in touch are books with nowhere left to go and shelving that frames a window; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

With a large share of homes around Lee built before 1919, plenty of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. One pair of alcoves might take shelves and the other cupboards, a TV or a desk. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What it’s made from

Shelves

Shelves can be fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing.

Birch plywood

Shelf sag depends on span, depth and load. Birch plywood helps keep long shelves flat, and a front lip adds stiffness.

Questions from Lee

Is parking a problem for fitting in Lee?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you cover Lee?

Yes. We work in Lee and across Lewisham.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

We make it in our workshop, to the sizes taken during the design visit. After that, we fit it in your home.

How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?

It depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The bookcase is built in our workshop first.

What are your built-in bookshelves made from?

We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job best. Your quote sets out the materials.

Practical tips

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
  • Let us know if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves
  • Decide whether you want doors on the lower section
  • Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves

Leave a little air behind books on an external wall so air can move. Watch for any musty smell or marks.

Keep heavy things on low shelves, and never climb the shelves to reach the top.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You get in touch and let us know what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
  5. We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand

Starting with a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Why bespoke in Lee?

Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them straight away. You can take them to your next home. Fitted shelving is made for one wall and stays with the house. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so off-the-shelf pieces either do not fit or leave a gap either side. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Why us?

  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Saturdays by prior arrangement
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
  • Every London borough and the City of London covered

When is bespoke worth it?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
