Horn Park Wall Beds

In Horn Park, we design wall beds around the room you actually have. Your wall bed is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.

  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • More floor space in a studio flat
  • A bed that fills a little-used room

Wall beds in Horn Park

Is it time for wall beds?

Others want the bed to be part of a wider storage wall. Shelves, cupboards or a desk built around it turn one wall into storage, workspace and a bed.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • A playroom that can sleep visitors
  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • A proper bed instead of a sofa bed
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day

Eltham Palace, about 1 mile east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

About our wall beds in Horn Park

The mattress has to suit the mechanism, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We’ll talk through what suits the bed at the measuring visit, so the mattress you choose fits. If your home has a living room with a bed that folds away and a real mattress for visitors, wall beds made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Horn Park, the spare room may be the small one at the front, over the hall and stairs. That is where wall beds earn their place, making a small room work as a dressing room, a guest room or both. Nothing is assumed: the room is measured wall by wall.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Fitting day, step by step

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about at the measuring visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it’s worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room.
  2. We visit, measure and discuss the bed, shelves and desk. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop.
  5. We fit the bed and storage in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Getting a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits parts that carry load. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Shelves

Open shelves soften a wall of cupboards and keep it from feeling heavy.

When you need someone else

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Decorating around the cabinet
  • Structural work to the wall or floor
  • Electrical work for reading lights

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Horn Park homes and wall beds

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 44% of the housing in the area around Horn Park, with about 22% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Horn Park include Church of St Saviours (Grade II), about 0.5 miles east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. More than a third of the homes in the area around Horn Park (about 44%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Saviour, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Close to Manor House Gardens? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Questions we are often asked

Does a conservation area in or near Horn Park affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you cover homes near Lee station?

Yes, homes across Greenwich and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Should I send photos?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

It’s made in sections. At the design visit, we measure the route as well as the room.

What space does a fold-down bed take up?

The bed needs room in front of it to come down, as well as the depth of the cabinet itself. We measure this at the measuring visit, so the design works.

Will a wall bed work on my wall?

That’s something we look at when we measure. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker’s instructions set what’s needed.
