Built-in bookshelves in Greenwich: how it works

Built-in bookcases are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. MDF suits the panels and faces, while birch plywood is used where strength matters. You can have a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in the colour you choose. We fit across Greenwich and the rest of London. We make built-in bookshelves from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a home library or study and bare walls that could hold shelving.

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. We then send a written quote for the bookshelves.
  4. The sections are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.

What goes into your quote

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit.

What you get with us

  • Designed for the room you have
  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement
  • Scribed to uneven walls

How to get a quote

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit. To get started, message us from the contact page with a few details about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Homes across Greenwich and their living rooms

If you are in one of the older streets of Greenwich, expect walls that lean and floors that dip, and built-in bookshelves are scribed to them on site. Newer homes nearby tend to have stud walls instead, so the fixings change.

In Greenwich, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 26%) and before 1919 (about 22%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. A quarter or more of the homes in Greenwich (about 26%) were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Newer homes usually have plasterboard stud walls and open-plan rooms, often with no chimney breast, so the fixings go into the studs, or heavier pieces stand on the floor. About 43% of households in Greenwich live in purpose-built flats, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Since August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping, so access to homes in Greenwich is planned in advance.

Plumstead: Living in a block of flats near Plumstead station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For a family home near South Rise Primary School, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

Spraying coats edges and corners evenly. The colour is agreed before we start.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives crisp edges and smooth faces, ready for spray or hand painting. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted work.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in Greenwich

For people who work from home, the wall behind the desk matters. Shelving close to the desk keeps books and files within reach, and a built-in run looks tidy on a video call. Cupboards below can hide the less tidy things.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • A bare wall above a doorway
  • A room lined with books
  • Shelves that suit a period room
  • Books piled on the floor

Where other trades come in

Not everything around built-in bookshelves is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Decorating the rest of the room
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Will you paint the walls around the furniture?

No. Plastering and decorating are not part of our work. The furniture itself is spray painted or hand painted.

Will built-in bookshelves sag?

We plan each shelf for its span, depth and load. Long spans get a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip, a support or shorter bays, often in birch plywood. Tell us about heavy collections at the design visit.

Do you work for landlords and letting agents?

Yes. Landlords and letting agents can arrange a design visit in the same way as anyone else. Access has to be agreed with the tenants.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. We cannot advise on leases, so please check yours.

How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?

The fitting depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The making happens in our workshop.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Can you build shelves over a doorway?

Yes. Wrapping shelves around a door or window is a good way to fill a wall. We measure the openings at the measuring visit, and the shelving is planned around the frames.
