Built-in Bookshelves in Greenwich

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on built-in bookshelves in Greenwich starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Wasted wall space around a door or window
  • Shelves that suit a period room
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files

Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in Greenwich

Records, large art books and collections need shelves sized for them. Standard bookcases rarely suit them.

People typically get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Space for art books and records
  • Shelves that suit a period room
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
  • A room lined with books

Near listed buildings like Royal Observatory, under half a mile south of the centre of Greenwich, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

About our built-in bookshelves in Greenwich

Shelving near a radiator needs some thought. The heat needs somewhere to go, so we don’t box a radiator in without leaving space or an opening for it. Often the simplest answer is to stop the shelves short of it, or ask their plumber about moving it. People typically come to us about shelving that frames a window and shelving that works with picture rails and cornices; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Many homes around Greenwich have been built since 2000, and in a newer home the living space is normally open-plan, without a chimney breast. That means built-in bookshelves often create the structure of the room, framing a screen or running a full wall. Plasterboard stud walls are common in newer homes, so heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, for an even, factory-like finish.

Shelves

For a long shelf, we use a thicker board, a lip on the front or a support. Splitting the run into shorter bays also helps.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Greenwich

Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Greenwich?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Greenwich?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

How do I get a quote?

It’s easiest to message us from the contact page with a few details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

Is the furniture made to order?

Everything is made in our workshop for your room, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Do you fit furniture for landlords?

Yes. We make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let as well as for householders. We’ll need access agreed with any tenants for the visit and for fitting day.

How do you decide on shelf depth?

The depth is set around your books. Deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower shelves above is a common layout.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Greenwich

Homes built before 1919 make up about 36% of the housing in the streets around Greenwich, with about 35% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of Greenwich is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 35% of homes in the streets around Greenwich were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes normally have plasterboard stud walls and open-plan rooms, often with no chimney breast, so the fixings go into the studs, or heavier pieces stand on the floor.

The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 0.2 miles north-west. Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf bookcases come in fixed depths, which rarely suits a mixed collection. We can make deeper sections below and shallower ones above to suit what you own. In an open-plan room, standalone pieces can look scattered, while fitted furniture can give the space structure.

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.

Fitting day, step by step

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind, and whether you want cupboards below.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, for you to look over.
  4. We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop.
  5. The shelving is fitted in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Advice

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases.
