Built-in bookshelves in Maze Hill: what you get

Shelving can frame a door or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it, or frame a window with a seat or desk below. It makes use of wall space that’s usually left bare. Most enquiries start with shelves that sag under books and a room lined with books; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Homes built since 2000 are often open-plan, with the kitchen, dining and living space in one room, and many homes around Maze Hill were built in that time. In a room like that, built-in bookshelves can help separate the sitting area from the kitchen. Finished floors in newer homes mark easily, so they’re covered while we work.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

Living-room carpentry in Maze Hill: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Maze Hill were built since 2000 (about 44%) and before 1919 (about 32%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List has 87 entries within half a mile of the centre of Maze Hill. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Newer homes are more common around Maze Hill than across Greenwich: about 44% date from 2000 onwards, against about 26%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That makes plasterboard stud walls and compact rooms more likely, which shapes the fixings and sizes.

If you live in a flat close to Maze Hill station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For families living near John Roan School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Queen's House, about 0.3 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

Maze Hill is about 3 miles east of Plumstead, in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. We can visit homes in Maze Hill on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. Maze Hill is one of 18 places on our list for Greenwich.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.

How we price built-in bookshelves

Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The width and height of the space
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What we need to know

To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you’re ready, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.

Questions from Maze Hill

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Maze Hill?

Yes, we work across Greenwich, Maze Hill included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

I live in a flat in Maze Hill. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can bookshelves go around a door?

Yes. Wrapping shelves around a door or window is a good way to fill a wall. We measure the openings at the design visit, and the shelving is planned around the frames.

How do I get a quote?

The first step is to fill in our short enquiry form. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

How long will the fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Where other trades come in

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Decorating the rest of the room
  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
  • Knocking through or altering walls

Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

From workshop to your room

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so it helps to let us know at the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You let us know about your books and the wall you have in mind. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with the shelf spans in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing.
  4. We then make the bookcase in our workshop, with shelves thick enough for their span.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books.

Preparing the room

  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

How to get a quote

To get a quote, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.
