Built-in bookshelves for homes in Nine Elms
Bookshelves don’t have to stop at a doorway or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it, and the same works around a window with a seat beneath it. It makes use of wall space that is normally left bare. If you’re living with shelving that works with picture rails and cornices and somewhere to keep toys and books tidy, built-in bookshelves made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
In a home built since 2000, the aerial point and sockets are usually already fixed in place. Many homes around Nine Elms are from those years, so built-in bookshelves are typically designed around what’s already there. If you want an extra socket, that’s for your electrician.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve
Most people come to us because the books have outgrown the shelves. They’re stacked on the floor, two deep on the shelves or packed into boxes. Built-in shelving uses the full height and width of a wall.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Shelves packed two rows deep
- Shelves deep enough for large books
- Shelving that frames a window
- Empty alcoves that could hold books
Close to Pimlico Gardens? Built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- How parking will work on your street
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- How doors and drawers are fitted
Living-room storage in Nine Elms
In the streets around Nine Elms, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 43%) and before 1919 (about 28%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Nine Elms is within about a quarter of a mile of the Churchill Gardens Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 78% of households around Nine Elms live in purpose-built flats, well above the figure for Wandsworth as a whole, about 48%, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. So the route in, from stairs to lifts, is part of the design.
Near listed buildings like Battersea Power Station, under half a mile west of the centre of Nine Elms, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a period home close to All Saints, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

- Redecorating, which is for your decorator
- Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
- Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Nine Elms
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Do you cover homes near Battersea Park station?
Yes, homes across Wandsworth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
What finishes do you offer?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Can shelves go around a radiator?
It needs planning. Any shelving over or around a radiator needs room for the heat to move into the room. Moving a radiator is a plumber’s job.
What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
What keeps bookshelves from bowing under books?
Shelves are sized for their span, depth and the weight they’ll carry. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support, often in birch plywood. Mention anything very heavy when we plan.

What happens on fitting day
Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so it is useful to sort them out in advance. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.
- You get in touch with a few details about where the bookshelves will go.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
- A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
- The sections are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
- The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.
How to prepare
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time

Looking after your furniture
People planning built-in bookshelves often ask about these. They help whatever the room:
- Let us know about parking and access during the design visit
- Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide
- Plan heavy items for the lower shelves
- Estimate how many metres of books you have
A soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is all painted shelves need. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners.
Do not block the space left for radiator heat with books or objects. Trapped heat is not good for the room or the books.
Materials and finishes
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribe strips are trimmed on site to follow the walls and ceiling. It’s how a straight bookcase meets a wall that is not straight.
Birch plywood
Shelf sag depends on span, depth and load. Birch plywood helps keep long shelves flat.
