Caring for painted furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Decide whether you want fixed shelves, adjustable shelves or both
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
  • Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
  • Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide

Keep a record of the colour for future touch-ups. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place.

If you see damp behind or near the shelving, look into it early. Damp needs its cause fixing by the right trade.

About our built-in bookshelves in Oval

Built-in bookcases are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives smooth panels that paint well, and birch plywood gives strong shelves. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We work across London, including Oval. If your home has wasted wall space around a door or window and bookshelves in keeping with an older house, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Most households around Oval live in purpose-built flats, from mansion blocks to modern developments. A mansion block flat often keeps its chimney breast, alcoves and high ceilings, whereas a modern flat tends to have plasterboard walls and an open-plan layout. Built-in bookshelves are designed for whichever you have.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

How it’s made

Shelves

Shelves can be fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves add rigidity, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Cupboard doors in MDF stay flat and paint well. There’s no grain to show through the paint.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.

Living-room carpentry in Oval: local notes

About 32% of the homes in the streets around Oval went up since 2000, and about 26% before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 24 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Oval. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Purpose-built flats are more common around Oval than across Lambeth: about 69% of households, against about 52%, based on Census 2021. So the route in, from stairs to lifts, is part of the design.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mark, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If you live in a period home close to Calvary Church of God in Christ, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

Oval is about 1 mile south of Stockwell, part of the London Borough of Lambeth. Wherever you are in Oval, the process is the same: a design visit, a quote in writing, furniture made in our workshop and fitting in your home. Our work takes in places right across Lambeth, large and small.

In SW8, SW9 and SW1P, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. If your home is on a street like Lett Road, Rita Road and Wyvil Road, or close by, we can visit to measure up for built-in bookshelves. Oval sits close to the A203 and A3204. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. If you are just outside Oval, we also cover Kennington (1 mile north), South Lambeth (1 mile south-west), Little Portugal (1 mile south), North Brixton (1 mile south-east) and Vauxhall (1 mile north). Elsewhere in Lambeth, we also cover Streatham (4 miles south), West Norwood (4 miles south), South Bank (2 miles north), Brixton (2 miles south), Gipsy Hill (4 miles south) and Streatham Hill (3 miles south).

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Does a conservation area in or near Oval affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Oval?

Yes. Oval is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Lambeth and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.

How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?

The wall is checked when we measure. We use fixings that suit the wall, from solid brick to studwork, and heavy bookcases are fixed to sound parts of the wall. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.

How do I get started?

Simply drop us a line using the contact form. Rough measurements and a few photos help, and we will arrange a design visit.

How do you decide on shelf depth?

The depth is set around your books. Another option is deeper storage below and shallower shelves above, and it keeps paperbacks from getting lost at the back.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve

Working from home is another reason. Shelves for books and files close to the desk make the day easier. Cupboards below can hide the less tidy things.

People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
  • Books piled on the floor
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files
  • Wasted wall space around a door or window

Living in a block of flats near Vauxhall station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Many blocks have entry systems, concierge desks or rules on booking the lift, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Communal areas and floors are protected on the way in.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the wall and your books.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
  3. Your written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The bookcase is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
  5. The shelving is fitted, fixed and checked with you. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it is best to load the shelves gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Starting with a design visit

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, use our contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
