What happens on fitting day

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are covered while we work.

  1. We start with how you use the kitchen and what is not working.
  2. We come to measure up and plan the layout with you, including where the sink and appliances will go.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made and finished in our workshop.
  5. The kitchen is fitted in your home, and your plumber, electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register do the plumbing, electrics and gas. We do not arrange those trades, so it helps to book them early.

How to prepare

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Ask for a quote

To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

About our bespoke kitchens in Nine Elms

A bespoke kitchen is built around the room you have. Every unit is sized from careful measurements taken during the design visit, so the runs fit neatly from wall to wall. You decide the layout, the storage and the colour with us before anything is built in our workshop. We make kitchens from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a kitchen finished in your colours and cabinets built around the appliances you choose.

Many homes around Nine Elms were built since 2000, and some came with kitchens that suit the building more than the people living in it. Cabinets made for your room can take its place, with the worktop, sink and appliances you choose. Other trades handle the plumbing, gas and electrics.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Nine Elms

My home in Nine Elms is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Kitchens are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

I live near Battersea Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Wandsworth and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Can you build an island in my kitchen?

If the room is big enough, yes. At the design visit we check the clearances around it. If it would crowd the kitchen, we will say so.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and a written quote follows.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Made-to-measure kitchens in Nine Elms

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Nine Elms were built since 2000 (about 43%) and before 1919 (about 28%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. The Churchill Gardens Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Nine Elms. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop.

Carlyle's House, about 1.1 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. If you live near Pimlico Gardens, a cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site, once the kitchen is fitted. Chips are simple to touch in.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing is how cabinets meet a wall that isn’t flat for a close fit.

The problems bespoke kitchens solve

In a flat, the kitchen may share a wall with the living space or sit in a narrow galley. Bespoke cabinets can make the most of a small or odd-shaped room, so every run is used.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • A kitchen finished in your colours
  • Making the most of a galley kitchen
  • A central island in a larger kitchen
  • Open shelves with cupboards below

For families living near St Gabriel's CofE Primary School, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Before and after fitting day

People planning bespoke kitchens often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Make sure walls are dry before cabinets go in
  • Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access
  • Know your appliance sizes early
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

Use the cooker hood or open a window when cooking, to keep steam off the cabinets. Ventilation helps the whole kitchen.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before changing the kitchen. We can’t advise on your lease.
