How we make built-in bookshelves for South Lambeth
Shelving can frame a door or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it, or frame a window with a seat or desk below. It makes use of wall space that’s normally left bare. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a bare wall above a doorway and shelves packed two rows deep.
Homes built since 2000 are often open-plan, with the kitchen, dining and living space in one room, and around South Lambeth many homes date from those years. Built-in bookshelves can give the sitting end of an open-plan room its own identity, without putting up a wall. Floors are protected throughout, as newer finishes mark easily.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

How fitting day works
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.
- You get in touch and let us know what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
- We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
- Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
- In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
- The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.
Before fitting day
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
How to get a quote
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Advice
Before and after fitting day
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Allow room for the collection to grow
- Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
- Mention anything very heavy, like records or large art books
- Check the heights of art books, files and records
Painted shelves feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, lift books onto the shelves rather than pushing them across.
If you see damp behind or near the shelving, look into it early. The cause is a job for the right trade, and it is easier to deal with before it spreads.
Built-in bookshelves for homes in South Lambeth
In the area around South Lambeth, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 46%) and before 1919 (about 21%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The South Lambeth Road Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of South Lambeth. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Fewer homes around South Lambeth date from before 1919 than across Lambeth: about 21%, against about 40%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We check what the walls are made of at the design visit, as they vary with the age of the home.
If you live in a period home close to St Stephen's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For a family home near Herbert Morrison Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

What affects the price in South Lambeth
Several things affect the price:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
Helping us understand the room
You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- How you want to use the space
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Examples of the look you are after
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Is it time for built-in bookshelves?
For people who work from home, the wall behind the desk matters. Shelving close to the desk keeps books and files within reach. Cupboards underneath hide printers, paper and clutter.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- Bare walls that could hold shelving
- Storage for children’s books and games
- Shelving that frames a window
- Space for art books and records
For a flat near Vauxhall station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Whether they measure the room themselves
When you need someone else
Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:
- Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
- Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
- Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician

Questions we’re often asked
Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in South Lambeth?
Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London, and South Lambeth is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in South Lambeth?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
Can you build shelves over a doorway?
Yes. A bookcase around a door or window uses the whole wall. We measure the openings during the design visit, and the shelving is planned around the frames.
