Built-in living-room furniture in Norbury

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Norbury were built before 1919 (about 43%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 34%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Norbury, Historic England’s list includes Norbury Hall (Grade II), under half a mile west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 34% of homes in the neighbourhood around Norbury date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, which shape where built-in bookshelves go.

For an older house near St Oswald, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For a family home near Kensington Avenue Primary School, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

About our built-in bookshelves in Norbury

Built-in bookcases are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives smooth panels that paint well, and birch plywood gives strong shelves. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. We fit across Croydon and the rest of London. If you’re living with room for a record collection and shelving that works with picture rails and cornices, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Plenty of semis and interwar houses have been extended at the back or had the back rooms knocked through, and around Norbury, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, built-in bookshelves can run the full length of one wall, or mark out the sitting end from the dining end. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The sections are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Ask for a quote

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Do you cover homes near Norbury station?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Norbury?

Yes, we work across Croydon, Norbury included, and across the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

Getting it in is planned during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?

Some or all of them can be adjustable. A few fixed shelves keep the bookcase rigid, and the rest can be adjustable.

Can shelves go around a radiator?

It needs planning. Any shelving over or around a radiator needs room for the heat to move into the room. Moving a radiator is a plumber’s job.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve

Some want a room that works as a library or a study. A wall of shelves changes how a room feels and can take a desk or reading seat too.

People typically get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • Shelves that suit a period room
  • Shelves deep enough for large books
  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy

For a flat near Norbury station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

What to check before you book

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Real projects you can actually look at

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Norbury

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • The width and height of the space
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Helping us understand the room

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • How you want to use the space

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit. To book one, message us from the contact page.

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

Spraying in the workshop means the shelves arrive already painted. Let the paint cure fully before loading heavy books.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed on site to follow the walls and ceiling. It is how a straight bookcase meets a wall that isn’t straight.
