Fitted home offices in Norbury, Croydon

In Norbury, we design fitted home offices around the room you actually have. Your home office is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.

  • Glare from a window on the screen
  • Work things on show in the evening
  • Files and folders piling up

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF suits panels and angled pieces. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. It makes up most of the visible parts.

Pull-out drawers

A set of drawers can sit under one end of the desk. The middle stays open for your knees and chair. The design visit settles the layout.

How we make fitted home offices for Norbury

Light matters in a home office. Glare from a window can make a screen tiring to use. We plan the desk position with the window in mind, often with the light to one side. It is one of the first things we look at in Norbury. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wires with no tidy route and files and folders piling up.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Norbury, a converted loft can be a quiet place to work, with storage tucked under the slope. For lofts, we work in rooms already converted or boarded. Or a desk can sit in an alcove or a bay.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What happens on fitting day

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space you want to work in.
  2. We visit to measure the space, including any slope, alcove or uneven wall.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each piece is set level and scribed to the walls, so there are no gaps along the edges.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once everything is in.

Preparing the room

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Starting with a design visit

Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

How we price fitted home offices

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

What to send when you get in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Norbury

Do you make fitted home offices for homes in Norbury?

Yes, we work across Croydon, Norbury included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.

I live near Norbury station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you fit a desk under a sloping ceiling?

Yes, where the loft has already been converted. We place the desk so you can sit and stand without hitting the slope, with storage built into the lower parts of the slope. The conversion itself isn’t our work.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Usually not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent.

Fitted home offices for homes in Norbury

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Norbury were built before 1919 (about 43%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 34%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Norbury, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. More than a third of the homes in the streets around Norbury (about 43%) were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Houses of that age often have alcoves beside a chimney breast that can take a desk, with shelving above.

For an older house near St Oswald, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. For a family home near Kensington Avenue Primary School, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework. For a flat near Norbury station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Looking after your furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Note the position of sockets in the room
  • Note how many files and books you need to store
  • Consider doors to hide work at the end of the day
  • Look at the window and where the light falls

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the furniture clean. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. The desk edge is touched most, so give it a wipe now and then.

Keep the chair from knocking the desk edge. Ease the chair in rather than pushing it hard. Small chips on a hand-painted finish are easy to touch in.

Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?

Bespoke furniture lets the desk, shelves and cupboards be planned together. Ready-made pieces bought separately rarely line up. The result is a calmer, more ordered room. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
