Bespoke kitchens in Norbury: what you get

Many people want a tall larder for food, tins and small appliances. We can build larders with shelves, drawers or racks inside the doors, planned around what you store. In an alcove or at the end of a run, it can use space that would otherwise be wasted. We make kitchens from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about cabinets for a narrow kitchen and a dresser that suits a period house.

An island needs space around it to work, and not every kitchen has that. Around Norbury, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, and some of those kitchens have been opened up enough to take one. We check the clearances during the design visit. Your plumber and electrician run any services to it.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Kitchens in Norbury: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Norbury were built before 1919 (about 43%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 34%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Norbury, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your street in Norbury joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the measuring visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

For a family home near Kensington Avenue Primary School, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off. If you live near Grangewood Park, a tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Norbury

Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in Norbury?

Yes, we work across Croydon, Norbury included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Norbury?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.

How much time does fitting need?

The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk it through at the measuring visit.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

How much does a bespoke kitchen cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The size of the room, the number of units and the finish all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Do you do the plumbing and electrics?

No, those are jobs for other trades. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician, and we fit the cabinets.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Touching up or repainting is simple with a hand-painted finish.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes and shelves. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Do you need bespoke kitchens in Norbury?

A painted kitchen can be refreshed later, which suits a long-term home. Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up later on.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Tall larder storage
  • A dresser that suits a period house
  • More storage in a small kitchen
  • Cabinets built around the appliances you choose

For an older house near St Oswald, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

What to check before you book

  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Is bespoke worth it?

Many off-the-shelf kitchens use chipboard carcasses with a printed or wrapped finish. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, painted in colours you choose, so the finish can be repainted later. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall typically ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Why us?

  • Work across the whole of London
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

How fitting day works

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the kitchen and the route in, including stairs, doorways and any lift.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the kitchen from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in pieces that suit the route in.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish; plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Related advice

When is bespoke worth it?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
