Built-in bookshelves for your home in Angell Town
Questions we are often asked
Is Angell Town in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?
Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London, and Angell Town is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
I live in a flat in Angell Town. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.
What happens at the design visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?
That depends on how the wall is built. Fixings are chosen for the wall type, into sound brick or studs. If a wall isn’t suitable, we’ll tell you.
About our built-in bookshelves in Angell Town
In period rooms, shelving has to meet skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Shelves can stop beneath the picture rail, run to the cornice or be cut around the details, whichever suits the room. Since period walls are rarely flat, the edges are scribed to follow them. Most enquiries start with a bare wall above a doorway and empty alcoves that could hold books; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
A flat’s living room often has to hold the sofa, the TV, the books and the dining table. Around Angell Town, where most households live in purpose-built flats, built-in bookshelves that use the height of the room help keep the floor clear. Shallow units on one wall can hold more than a standalone bookcase while using less space.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Boards, parts and paint
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is stiff and strong, which makes it our usual choice for long or heavily loaded shelves. You can paint the edge or show the layers.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, which suits uprights, side panels and doors. It is a sensible choice against an external wall.
Living-room storage in Angell Town
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Angell Town were built before 1919 (about 38%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 19%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Angell Town, Historic England’s list includes Church of St John the Divine (Grade I), about 0.6 miles north, and Christ Church (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles north. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. In Angell Town, a van will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Let us know about parking near your home during the design visit.
For families living near St John's Angell Town Church of England Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Close to Max Roach Park? Built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. Living in a block of flats near Loughborough Junction station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
With off-the-shelf shelving, you’re limited to the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you. Off-the-shelf furniture is sized for an average room, and flats are rarely average, leaving gaps or crowding a door or radiator. Built-in pieces are designed around them.
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Why choose us
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
- Over 300 projects completed
- Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home

Caring for painted furniture
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Tell us if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves
- Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide
- Mention anything very heavy, like records or large art books
- Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
A soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is all painted shelves need. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays.
If you see damp behind or near the shelving, look into it early. The cause is a job for the right trade, and it is easier to deal with before it spreads.
When you need someone else
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:
- Structural changes, such as taking out a chimney breast
- Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
- Relocating radiators or pipework
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Fitting day, step by step
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and some buildings set hours for noisy work. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.
