How fitting works for bespoke kitchens
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: kitchens are made in sections sized for each of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room and how you cook.
- We come to measure up and plan the layout with you.
- You get a written quote for the cabinets, with the materials and finish set out, for you to read through.
- The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are built in our workshop.
- We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician handle the plumbing, gas and electrics.
Before we arrive
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Bespoke kitchens in North Brixton: what you get
A kitchen needs other trades as well as a carpenter. Your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we plan the cabinets around where their work goes. If your home has a central island in a larger kitchen and spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets, kitchens made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
Small kitchens gain the most from tall pull-out larders and corners that are properly used. Around North Brixton, most households live in purpose-built flats. The appliances you choose can be built in, so the run looks continuous.
Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
What it’s made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF suits kitchens, as it stays stable and takes paint well.
Doors and drawer fronts
Painted doors can be refreshed later if you change the colour scheme.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Many off-the-shelf kitchens use chipboard carcasses with a printed or wrapped finish. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, painted in colours you choose, so the finish can be repainted later. In a flat, every bit of floor counts, and standalone furniture uses more of it than it needs. Fitted furniture can go to the ceiling and fill a recess exactly.
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in North Brixton
The biggest shares of homes in the area around North Brixton were built before 1919 (about 28%) and since 2000 (about 26%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. The centre of North Brixton is within about a quarter of a mile of the Brixton Road Conservation Area. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. Purpose-built flats are more common around North Brixton than across Lambeth: about 69% of households, against about 52%, the 2021 Census shows. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.
For a family home near Van Gogh Academy, a drawer set aside for lunch boxes and water bottles keeps mornings calmer. Close to Max Roach Park? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. Near listed buildings like Church of St John the Divine, less than half a mile north-east of the centre of North Brixton, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in North Brixton
I live in a flat in North Brixton. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Kitchens are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Is parking a problem for fitting in North Brixton?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
What are your kitchens made from?
Our kitchens are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.
How much time does fitting need?
It depends on the kitchen. How long fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you can plan your other trades around it.
Can I choose my own worktop and appliances?
The cabinets are designed for the worktop, sink and appliances you’ve picked. It’s useful to choose them before the design is final, and the quote confirms what’s included.

Could you do it yourself?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
