Built-in bookshelves for homes in North Finchley

Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We often use birch plywood, which is stiff and strong. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are low shelves children can reach and wasted wall space around a door or window.

London homes run from Victorian terraces and interwar semis to mansion blocks and recent flats, and a home in North Finchley could be any of these. Each brings different walls and floors, so the design of built-in bookshelves starts with a look at what you have. A period house may need scribing to bowed walls, while a newer flat may need fixings for plasterboard.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Built-in bookshelves in North Finchley: local notes

In the area around North Finchley, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 29%) and before 1919 (about 26%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 10 entries within half a mile of the centre of North Finchley. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Barnet sets its own rules. Where a street in North Finchley is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Let us know what the parking is like at the design visit.

Near listed buildings like Coachhouse Between Number 34 and 36, less than half a mile east of the centre of North Finchley, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If your home is one of the older houses near St. Barnabas Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. The wider area includes historic houses such as Heath Hall, about 2.9 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Practical tips

Getting the most from built-in bookshelves starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Mention anything very heavy, like records or large art books
  • Measure your tallest and deepest books
  • Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
  • Allow room for the collection to grow

Paint is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. At first, lift books onto the shelves rather than pushing them across.

Keep heavy things on low shelves.

What we don’t do

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
  • Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Relocating radiators or pipework

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in North Finchley

How do you fit built-in bookshelves in a flat in North Finchley?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Built-in bookshelves are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to New Southgate station?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Can built-in shelves be adjustable?

Some or all of them can be adjustable. A few fixed shelves keep the bookcase rigid, and the rest can be adjustable.

How do I get started?

Just tell us about the room on our contact form. Rough sizes and a few photos help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch.

How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. Either way, the day is planned during the design visit. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You describe the room and what the shelves will hold. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with the shelf spans in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing.
  4. Once you are happy, the shelving is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves thick enough for their span.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Getting a quote
