TV and media units in Oakleigh Park

How we make TV and media units for Oakleigh Park

If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan the panels and shelves around the bracket position and the cable route behind it. If it stands on the unit, we size the top to suit. Typical reasons to get in touch are a tangle of wires behind the TV and standard units leaving gaps; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

A house from between the wars typically has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, and the proportions of TV and media units are set to match. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Oakleigh Park, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the design visit.

FAQs: TV and media units in Oakleigh Park

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Oakleigh Park?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London, and Oakleigh Park is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Oakleigh Park?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Will the cables be hidden?

That is the aim, and it’s planned from the start. Access panels make future changes easy. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?

The unit can be planned either way. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables, and if it stands on the unit we size the top for it.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Living-room storage in Oakleigh Park

About 32% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Oakleigh Park went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 23% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Oakleigh Park include Lawrence Campe Almshouses (Grade II), under half a mile south-east, and St James's Primary School (Grade II), under half a mile east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Purpose-built flats are home to about 41% of households in the streets around Oakleigh Park, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

If you live near Swan Lane Open Space, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. For families living near Queenswell Infant & Nursery School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Living in a block of flats near Oakleigh Park station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Honest limits

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Removing a chimney breast or any structural work
  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
  • Plastering or decorating around the unit

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Cable routes
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Ventilated cabinets

Caring for painted furniture

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit
  • Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
  • Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
  • Talk to your electrician early about sockets

A soft, slightly damp cloth is all painted surfaces need. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, which can mark the finish.

Heavy equipment is best kept low, and no single shelf overloaded.

How fitting day works

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally simple, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. TV and media units arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment, and where the sockets are now.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, for you to look over.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment.

Before fitting day

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
