Wall beds in Oakleigh Park, Barnet

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on wall beds in Oakleigh Park starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time
  • Hiding the bed when it is not in use

What affects the price in Oakleigh Park

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The internal fittings

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

What we need to know

Ahead of the design visit, we will normally ask about:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

About our wall beds in Oakleigh Park

Studio flats benefit more than most from a bed that folds away. During the day, the room is somewhere to sit, work and eat, and at night it becomes a bedroom. We can build shelves, cupboards or a desk around the bed cabinet, so the whole wall works hard. If your home has a flexible room for a growing family and a bed that fills a little-used room, that’s what wall beds are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A good part of the housing around Oakleigh Park is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor. The main bedroom may have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood gives a strong carcass for a piece that moves every day.

Shelves

A few open shelves beside the bed break up a run of doors.

Fitting day, step by step

You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the room. Mention who the bed is for.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through the bed, shelves and desk. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

How to prepare

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

How to get a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf units can leave gaps at the sides or top. A bespoke cabinet can run the full width and height, with storage or shelves filling the rest of the wall. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check during the design visit.
