How we make fitted cupboards for Roehampton

In many London hallways, space is tight, so a cupboard has to earn its place. A shallow cupboard can hold coats, shoes and bags without blocking the way, fitted out with a rail, hooks or shelves. Some people like a low bench with storage beneath for putting shoes on by the door. People usually come to us about a cupboard for a recess or odd corner and a boiler cupboard that keeps access clear, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Many homes around Roehampton date from the post-war decades. Post-war homes usually have squarer rooms and fewer nooks than period ones, so fitted cupboards often create the storage the house never had. Walls may be concrete, block or brick, so fixings are chosen for the wall.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Post-war houses tend to have straightforward halls and stairs, which helps when the sections come in. The way in is still measured, along with the room. On the day, sections are joined, levelled and fixed, with floors protected throughout.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. We visit to measure up and talk through the design.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on edges that meet the walls.
  5. We fit the cupboards and trim the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. Your finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site; go gently with it at first while it cures.

Advice

Questions we’re often asked

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you cover homes near Barnes station?

Yes. We cover all of Wandsworth and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?

Yes. Each cupboard is trimmed to the shape of the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. It is one of the reasons fitted joinery suits period homes.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

How are fitted cupboards priced?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each cupboard is different, so we quote once we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Spray-painted finish

With a spray finish, the painting is done in the workshop, which keeps work in your home to fitting.

Plinths and scribe strips

We trim the edge of each cupboard to follow the wall, closing any gaps.

Fitted cupboards for homes in Roehampton

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Roehampton were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 46%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 18%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. Roehampton is partly covered by the Dover House Estate Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. About 46% of homes in the neighbourhood around Roehampton were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Post-war homes often have fewer nooks than older houses, so fitted cupboards add storage that was never built in, with fixings chosen for the wall.

Near listed buildings like Roehampton House (at Queen Mary's Hospital), under half a mile south-west of the centre of Roehampton, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Fulham Palace, about 1.3 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. If you live in a period home close to St Margaret's Church, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Before and after fitting day

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Leave room in front of the meters
  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Point out anything that needs access
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

Keep the boiler cupboard clear inside, and do not block the ventilation. When the boiler is serviced, the engineer can open the doors fully to get to it.

Tell us about parking and access at the design visit. Many London streets are in controlled parking zones, and blocks of flats can have rules about lifts and deliveries.
