Fitted cupboards in St George in the East
Landings often have a corner or a stretch of wall that does nothing. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves spaced to suit what goes on them. The doors are planned so they open cleanly on a narrow landing. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a neat cupboard around the boiler and a linen cupboard on the landing.
A large number of homes around St George in the East date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats in newer developments. Boilers, cylinders and consumer units often sit in a hall cupboard, and any new storage keeps their access and ventilation. Cupboards can be shallow where space is tight, so the hallway still feels open.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- The overall size of the piece
- Parking and unloading on your street
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
Getting in touch
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Any ideas or images you have saved
You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
From workshop to your room
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing.
- We start with the space and what you want to store, including anything awkward like a boiler or meter.
- We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
- The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.
Before we arrive
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Advice
What fitted cupboards can’t fix
We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:
- Any plumbing in a utility room
- Work on a boiler, which is for a Gas Safe engineer
- Moving gas or electricity meters
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Bespoke fitted cupboards or ready-made?
Standard cupboards come in set widths and heights, and the space around them is often wasted. Ours are built to the full width and height you choose, which can add a good deal of storage. Big standalone units can dominate a compact room, whereas fitted pieces painted to suit the walls sit back into the space.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.
Why choose us
- Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- Work across the whole of London
- A spray or hand-painted finish
- Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement

What else we make in St George in the East
Storage in St George in the East homes: local notes
About 37% of the homes in the neighbourhood around St George in the East went up since 2000, and about 29% between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 120 entries within half a mile of the centre of St George in the East. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. About 80% of households in the area around St George in the East live in purpose-built flats, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
For an older house near St Peter's, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. Near listed buildings like Church of St George in the East, under half a mile north-east of the centre of St George in the East, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. For a flat near Shadwell station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Common questions about fitted cupboards
Does a conservation area in or near St George in the East affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
How do you fit fitted cupboards in a flat in St George in the East?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
How much does a fitted cupboard cost?
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A small boiler cupboard and a full run of hallway storage are very different jobs, so we quote once we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Will the cupboards fit my uneven walls?
Yes. Each cupboard is trimmed to the shape of the wall and levelled with a plinth or adjustable feet. That’s one of the main reasons to choose fitted cupboards in an older house.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?
Yes. The cupboard is built around the space and ventilation the boiler’s instructions ask for, and the doors open fully for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for a Gas Safe engineer.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
