Fitted cupboards designed for your room

From workshop to your room

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. We start with a short note from you about the space and what it needs to hold. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and talk through doors, shelves and rails. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. Everything is built and finished in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Fitted cupboards in St Giles: what you get

Few walls in an older house are truly straight, and floors and ceilings can be out of level too. Every cupboard is scribed, trimmed by hand to meet the wall, then set level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are cut around or met neatly, so the cupboard looks as if it has always been there. Typical reasons to get in touch are a hallway cupboard for coats and shoes and tall cupboards where space is short, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Older homes like many around St Giles have floors and ceilings that slope, and a large share of homes around St Giles are that old. Fitted cupboards are scribed to the walls and levelled on site so doors, lids and drawers run true. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Questions we’re often asked

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in St Giles?

Yes, St Giles is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Camden and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that are not straight?

Yes. Each cupboard is trimmed to the shape of the wall and levelled with a plinth or adjustable feet. It is one of the reasons fitted joinery suits period homes.

Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes. We design the cupboard to keep the clearances and ventilation set out in the boiler maker’s instructions, with doors that open wide for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

What are your cupboards made from?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.

What do fitted cupboards cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each cupboard is different, so we quote once we have seen the space. To get started, get in touch through our contact form.

How it’s made

Shelves

Some shelves can be set to move if your needs change.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Most painted cupboard doors we make are moisture-resistant MDF, as it stays stable and finishes evenly.

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Parking near your home

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What we need to know

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Approximate measurements of the space

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To book one, message us from the contact page.

St Giles homes and fitted cupboards

About 49% of the homes in the streets around St Giles went up before 1919, and about 21% since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. St Giles is partly covered by the Seven Dials (Covent Garden) Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. About 78% of households in the neighbourhood around St Giles live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. For a flat, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For an older house near Soho Baptist Chapel, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. Benjamin Franklin House, about 0.5 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. If you live near St Anne's Churchyard, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

What fitted cupboards can’t fix

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Plastering, decorating or repairs to the walls
  • Wiring for lights or sockets
  • Moving gas or electricity meters
