Chalk Farm Built-in Bookshelves

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make built-in bookshelves for homes in Chalk Farm, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Low shelves children can reach
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files
  • Books piled on the floor

Caring for painted furniture

Getting the most from built-in bookshelves starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide
  • Mention any radiator on the wall
  • Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting
  • Plan heavy items for the lower shelves

Make a note of the paint colour used so any touch-ups match. Small marks on a hand-painted finish are simple to touch up.

Keep any gap or opening above a radiator clear of books and objects. Trapped heat is not good for the room or the books.

Built-in bookshelves in Chalk Farm: what you get

A full bookcase is heavy, so the fixings matter. Each bookcase is fixed with fixings chosen for the wall. If a wall is weak or the plaster is loose, it’s best put right before fitting. Most enquiries start with a room lined with books and shelves that sag under books; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Around Chalk Farm, most households live in purpose-built flats, and in a flat the living room often has to do several jobs. Built-in bookshelves can bring shelving, closed storage and a screen into one run, keeping the floor clear. Fixings are matched to the wall, whether it’s solid or plasterboard.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Living-room carpentry in Chalk Farm: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Chalk Farm were built before 1919 (about 41%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Chalk Farm, Historic England’s list includes Chimps Breeding Colony the Gorilla House (Grade I), about 0.5 miles south, and Church of St Martin (Grade I), about 0.6 miles north. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Chalk Farm. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.

Winfield House, about 1.1 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For families living near Haverstock School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If you live in a period home close to St Silas Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Chalk Farm is about 2 miles south-east of St Pancras, in the London Borough of Camden. Anywhere in Chalk Farm, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Across Camden, we cover Chalk Farm, along with the rest of the borough.

In NW5, NW1 and NW3, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. If your home is on a street like Eton Road, Oval Road and Regal Lane, or close by, we can visit to measure up for built-in bookshelves. Chalk Farm is near the A5205, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you get in touch. Close by, we also work in Kentish Town (1 mile east), Primrose Hill (1 mile south-west), Haverstock (1 mile west), Belsize Park (1 mile west) and Camden Town (1 mile south-east). Other parts of Camden we cover include St Pancras (2 miles south-east), West End (2 miles south-east), St Giles (2 miles south-east), Seven Dials (2 miles south-east), West Hampstead (2 miles north-west) and Holborn (2 miles south-east).

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

With off-the-shelf shelving, you are limited to the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand, so they can match the walls or stand out. Large ready-made pieces can be hard to get up the stairs or into the lift, whereas fitted furniture comes in sections made for the way in. It is then put together in the room.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Why choose us

  • Every London borough and the City of London covered

What it costs

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The width and height of the space
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Before the design visit

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • How you want to use the space
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for each of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none.

  1. You get in touch with some details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.

Before we arrive

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Honest limits

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
  • Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Chalk Farm

Do you cover homes near Kentish Town West station?

Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room.

Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Chalk Farm?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Can bookshelves go around a door?

Yes. Wrapping shelves around a door or window is a good way to fill a wall. We measure the openings at the measuring visit, and the shelving is planned around the frames.

Will built-in bookshelves sag?

We plan each shelf for its span, depth and load. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support. Mention anything very heavy when we plan.

How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?

That depends on how the wall is built. Fixings are chosen for the wall type into sound structure. Where a wall cannot take the load, we’ll say so and suggest another approach.
