Ask about fitted wardrobes in St Luke's

Do you need fitted wardrobes in St Luke's?

Sometimes it’s a change in how a room is used. Built-in storage makes the room work for its new role while leaving space to move. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy
  • An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes

Living in a block of flats near Old Street station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

What to check before you book

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Fitted wardrobes in St Luke's

You can choose hinged or sliding doors. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. We weigh them up with you at the design visit. Most enquiries start with no space in front for doors to swing and space under the eaves going to waste, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large number of homes around St Luke's date from 2000 onwards, and in newer homes, bedrooms tend to be compact, with plasterboard stud walls. Heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor, rather than relying on the board alone. Where a small built-in cupboard came with the home, it can be reworked as part of the design.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

When you need someone else

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Building work to create a loft room
  • Treating damp or mould on the walls
  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space

Questions we’re often asked

How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in St Luke's?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in St Luke's?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a written quote after the design visit.

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

It depends on the room. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing, while sliding doors save space but only open part of the wardrobe at a time. We talk through both at the measuring visit.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

From workshop to your room

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Stud walls can carry pipes and cables, so we check before drilling, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing, ideally before fitting day.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

How to prepare

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Getting a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Related advice

Before and after fitting day

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
  • Think about where you’ll keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed

Hang clothes evenly along each rail. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail, so the rail stays straight.

Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe aren’t blocked, especially where the wardrobe meets an outside wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes.

Fitted bedroom furniture in St Luke's

In the neighbourhood around St Luke's, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 37%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 28%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of St Luke's include Wesley's Chapel (Grade I), less than half a mile east, and The Charterhouse (Grade I), less than half a mile south-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 37% of homes around St Luke's were built since 2000, well above the figure for Islington as a whole, about 19%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes often have stud walls and compact rooms, so fixings and sizes are planned with that in mind.

Mansion House, about 0.8 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. For an older house near Jewin Welsh Presbyterian Chapel, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

To be fair, modular wardrobe systems are easy to reconfigure. A bespoke interior is planned around what you own. Large standalone pieces don’t always fit the lift or the hallway, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections that fit. The sections are joined and fixed once inside.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.
