Thinking about wall beds in St Luke's? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote, before anything is made.

  • A home office that also sleeps guests
  • More floor space in a studio flat

Wall beds in St Luke's

Wall beds for homes in St Luke's

A wall bed needs clear space in front of it to fold down, so we plan the layout with that in mind. We think about where a chair, rug or desk will go, so the bed can come down without a shuffle. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are shelves or a desk around the bed and more floor space in a studio flat.

Hinged doors need space to open, which a compact bedroom may not have, so sliding doors or a careful layout can help. Many homes around St Luke's were built since 2000, and bedrooms in newer homes are often compact. The space in front is measured as carefully as the wall.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Bedrooms in St Luke's: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around St Luke's were built since 2000 (about 37%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 28%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 263 entries within half a mile of the centre of St Luke's. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and wall beds can be designed to work around them. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Islington included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in St Luke's, as it does anywhere else in London. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat close to Old Street station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is one of the older houses near Jewin Welsh Presbyterian Chapel, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Near listed buildings like Wesley's Chapel, less than half a mile east of the centre of St Luke's, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Where other trades come in

Not everything around wall beds is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
  • Building work to make a wall sound
  • Getting consent under your lease

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Hand-painted finish

Caring for painted furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth
  • Think about where extra bedding will go
  • Let us know about the wall’s construction
  • Think about how often the bed will be used

Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched up. A spray finish wipes clean and stays smooth and even.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer homes often have stud walls, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are covered while we work, and dust is kept to a minimum.

How we price wall beds

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How big the furniture is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It’s useful to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Before the design visit

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

For a quote for wall beds in St Luke's, drop us a line using the contact form. Let us know the room and the rough idea. We’ll arrange a design visit, then send a quote in writing.

Your questions about wall beds in St Luke's

My home in St Luke's is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Wall beds are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do you make wall beds for homes in St Luke's?

Yes, we work across Islington, St Luke's included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

What matters most is that the mattress suits the mechanism. We’ll explain its limits at the design visit, so you can pick the right one.

What does a wall bed cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, storage and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Can a wall bed go on any wall?

We check that at the design visit. Different walls need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
