St Paul's Cray Built-in Bookshelves

Built-in bookshelves for your home in St Paul's Cray: bookcases and shelving walls built into your home. We visit to measure and talk through the design, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it.

  • A room lined with books
  • Bare walls that could hold shelving
  • Shelves that sag under books

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

For cupboard doors below the shelves, MDF gives a flat, stable door. There’s no grain to show through the paint.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. It is easy to touch up later.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in St Paul's Cray

We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. MDF gives smooth panels that paint well, and birch plywood gives strong shelves. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We work across London, including St Paul's Cray. If your home has shelving behind a desk for books and files and storage for children’s books and games, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Around St Paul's Cray, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so that layout is worth knowing well. We tend to plan built-in bookshelves along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

What we don’t do

It is useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
  • Making good walls that can’t take fixings
  • Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving

Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in St Paul's Cray?

Children’s books, toys and games often need a home too. We can plan low shelves they can reach and higher shelves for later, with adjustable shelves for changing sizes.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Room for a record collection
  • Shelving that frames a window
  • Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
  • Bookcases that lean or wobble

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Living-room storage in St Paul's Cray

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 54% of the housing in the neighbourhood around St Paul's Cray, with about 18% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of St Paul's Cray. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Bromley has its own. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

If your children go to Leesons Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Living in a block of flats near St Mary Cray station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Do you cover homes near St Mary Cray station?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in St Paul's Cray?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?

That depends on how the wall is built. Fixings are chosen for the wall type into sound structure. If a wall isn’t suitable, we will tell you and suggest another approach.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.

How deep should bookshelves be?

That depends on your books. Paperbacks suit shallow shelves, while large books and records need deeper ones. We plan depths around your collection at the design visit.

Could you do it yourself?

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it is worth mentioning at the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
  5. We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.

Preparing the room

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
