What built-in bookshelves can’t fix

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
  • Structural changes, like taking out a chimney breast
  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Cupboards below
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Fixed and adjustable shelves

Built-in bookshelves in Poverest

Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them, whichever suits the room. Since period walls are rarely flat, the edges are scribed to follow them. If your home has space for art books and records and a bare wall above a doorway, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Around Poverest, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so it is a layout worth planning for. Built-in bookshelves typically go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Is bespoke worth it?

Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them straight away. They also come with you when you move. Built-in shelves stay with the house and are made for its walls, which is the trade-off. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, which shows up against standard furniture. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

Spraying in the workshop means the shelves arrive already painted. Let the paint cure fully before loading heavy books.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing means trimming the edges on site to meet the wall. This closes the gaps a straight bookcase would leave.

What affects the price in Poverest

The price for your room depends on:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The width and height of the space
  • Spray painting or hand painting

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

What to send when you contact us

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.

How fitting day works

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Built-in bookshelves arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. You get in touch with some details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
  3. We then send a quote in writing for the bookshelves.
  4. The sections are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Getting a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Poverest

I live near St Mary Cray station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Poverest?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.

What happens if there is a radiator where I want shelves?

We plan around it with care. We leave space so heat is not trapped. Moving a radiator is a plumber’s job.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Poverest were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 35%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 30%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Poverest, 6 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 30% of homes in the neighbourhood around Poverest were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Post-war rooms tend to be simple shapes, often without a chimney breast, so a full wall of built-in bookshelves is often the answer, with fixings chosen for the wall.

For families living near Poverest Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. For a flat near St Mary Cray station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If you live near Jubilee Country Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.
