Built-in bookshelves for your home in Grange Mills
Built-in bookshelves in Grange Mills: what you get
Shelving can frame a door or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it, or frame a window with a seat or desk below. It makes use of wall space that is normally left bare. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about bowing shelves in an old bookcase and shelves packed two rows deep.
Victorian and Edwardian houses were built with solid brick outside walls, while the walls inside can be brick or lath and plaster. Since a large share of the homes around Grange Mills date from before 1919, the wall type is checked before any fixing for built-in bookshelves is chosen. Lath and plaster needs a lighter touch and the right fixings.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising during the design visit.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them during the design visit.
How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.
- You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
- We then send a written quote for the bookshelves.
- We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
- Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Grange Mills
Can you fit built-in bookshelves to the uneven walls of an older house in Grange Mills?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Grange Mills?
Yes. Grange Mills is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Lambeth and London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
What depth do built-in bookshelves need?
The depth is set around your books. Deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower shelves above is a common layout.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
The time on site depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.
Looking after your furniture
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting
- Tell us where the heaviest things will go
- Note the sizes of your largest books and records
- Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
If you have adjustable shelves, move them when they’re empty, and check the supports are fully seated.
Overloading is the main cause of sagging. If you plan to add a heavy collection later, say so during the design visit, so the shelves can be sized for it.
Pricing built-in bookshelves in Grange Mills
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Spray painting or hand painting
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.
What to send when you get in touch
What helps most when you first contact us:
- Your postcode and the borough
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and a quote in writing follows.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Grange Mills homes and built-in bookshelves
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Grange Mills were built before 1919 (about 55%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. The La Retraite Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Grange Mills. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. All of London, Lambeth included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Grange Mills, as it does anywhere else in London. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.
If your children go to Henry Cavendish Primary School or a school nearby, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. For a flat near Balham station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If you live near Wandsworth Common, built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.
