Common questions about TV and media units
Is Streatham in the area you cover for TV and media units?
Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London, and Streatham is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Streatham?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Can a TV unit hold speakers?
Speakers and soundbars get open shelves sized for them. Closing speakers behind a door muffles them.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
The time on site depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
That is normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Who moves the sockets for a built-in TV wall?
Your electrician does that. Ideally it is done before fitting, and we plan cut-outs and cable routes around the sockets.
How we make TV and media units for Streatham
In many period living rooms, the chimney breast and its two alcoves shape the whole wall. Cupboards and shelves in the alcoves can hold the boxes, speakers and books, with the TV in one alcove or on the chimney breast. We keep any vent in the chimney breast clear. If your home has games, controllers and remotes everywhere and empty alcoves beside the TV, TV and media units made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often taller than in later houses, and around Streatham, a large share of homes are that age. Full-height TV and media units can run up to the picture rail or the cornice, with the top line set to match the room’s own mouldings. Blocked fireplaces are common too, and a capped chimney should still be ventilated before anything is built against it.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Looking after your furniture
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Measure your TV, or the size you expect to buy next
- Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
- Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
- Think about the viewing height from your sofa
Dust collects around equipment and vents, so a quick clean now and then helps. Clear vents keep equipment cooler.
Leave any new socket or wiring work to your electrician.
TV and media units in Streatham: local notes
About 55% of the homes in the streets around Streatham went up before 1919, and about 17% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. 12 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Streatham. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 30% of households in the area around Streatham live in flats in converted or shared houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.
If you live near Streatham Common, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Roman Catholic Church of the English Martyrs, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it during the design visit.
Why bespoke in Streatham?
An off-the-shelf TV stand is cheaper and quick to buy. It is also easy to replace a stand when your equipment changes. A built-in unit is planned for your room and your equipment. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.
We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

How fitting works for TV and media units
In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

Advice
Do you need TV and media units in Streatham?
Upgrading to a bigger screen is a common trigger. The old stand no longer suits it, or the screen takes over the room. Shelves and cupboards around the screen make it sit better in the room.
Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:
- Cables trailing across the wall
- Somewhere to keep games tidy
- A big screen that dominates the wall
- Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
If you live in a period home close to St Leonard's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
- Where they’ll park and unload
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
