Fitted Wardrobes in Turnham Green

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make fitted wardrobes for homes in Turnham Green, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall

When is bespoke worth it?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

About our fitted wardrobes in Turnham Green

Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. We can shape a wardrobe to follow the ceiling line, keeping long hanging where there is height and drawers or shelves lower down. Space that is hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. If your home has a room too narrow for hinged doors and empty alcoves in the bedroom, fitted wardrobes made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

With a large share of homes around Turnham Green built before 1919, many bedrooms sit against solid brick external walls. Those walls can be colder than internal ones, so wardrobes and storage on them are designed with ventilation behind and inside to help avoid condensation. Small back bedrooms and box rooms are common too, and they suit fitted wardrobes and other fitted storage well.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Shelves inside a wardrobe carry folded clothes, shoes and boxes. Birch plywood helps keep them straight.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Tall doors need a stable material. MDF gives a flat, smooth surface that paints well.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Modular interior systems can be rearranged easily, and that flexibility is useful. A bespoke interior is planned around what you own, and we can include adjustable shelves where you want flexibility. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

Why choose us

  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • Designed for the room you have
  • We work across all London boroughs

Turnham Green homes and fitted wardrobes

About 56% of the homes in the area around Turnham Green went up before 1919, and about 16% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Turnham Green is partly covered by the Chiswick House Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Hounslow sets its own rules. Where a street in Turnham Green is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Hogarth's House, about 0.2 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. Living in a block of flats near Chiswick station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If you live in a period home close to St. Nicholas Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You tell us about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
  2. We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. Once you are happy, the wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.

Before we arrive

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Turnham Green

Can you fit fitted wardrobes to the uneven walls of an older house in Turnham Green?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is it possible to have storage over the bed?

Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused and can include bedside shelves. We measure the bed and the room at the measuring visit.

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better, and in a roomier space hinged doors give easier access. We look at it with you when we measure.

How do I get a quote?

Just send us a few details through our contact form. It helps to send rough sizes and a few photos, and we will arrange a design visit.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

What you pay depends on:

  • How square the room is
  • The overall size of the piece
  • The internal fittings
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

What we need to know

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, use our contact form.
