Built-in bookshelves in Upper Clapton

The right depth depends on your books. Paperbacks need much less depth than hardbacks, art books or records. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. A common answer is deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower ones above. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste and a room lined with books.

Wherever your home in Upper Clapton sits in London’s mix of housing, the furniture is designed around your room rather than a standard size. Period rooms bring sloping floors and mouldings; newer rooms bring stud walls and service boxing. We measure for whichever you have, and the pieces are made to suit.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What built-in bookshelves cannot fix

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
  • Knocking through or altering walls
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

  • Birch plywood

Questions from Upper Clapton

I live near Clapton station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hackney and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Upper Clapton?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

What happens if there’s a radiator where I want shelves?

It’s possible with some thought. Heat needs space to escape, so we leave a gap or open front rather than boxing the radiator in. Some people prefer to keep shelves clear of it or ask a plumber to move it.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?

Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including anything on the walls near the work. We cover floors and doorways first. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.

  1. You contact us with some details about the wall and your books.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and agree shelf depths and spacing, and talk about cupboards below.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish, including spray or hand painting.
  4. We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them. Fixings are chosen to suit brick, plaster or stud walls.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Getting a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.

Upper Clapton homes and built-in bookshelves

About 44% of the homes in the streets around Upper Clapton went up before 1919, and about 17% between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Hackney included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Upper Clapton. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Thomas the Apostle, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For a family home near Harrington Hill Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve

Families often need shelves for children’s books and games. We can plan low shelves they can reach and higher shelves for later, with adjustable shelves for changing sizes.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files
  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy

Near listed buildings like White Lodge, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Upper Clapton, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

Tips worth knowing

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Tell us about parking and access during the design visit
  • Check the heights of art books, files and records
  • Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Tell us where the heaviest things will go

On an outside wall, don’t pack books tight against the back so air can move. Watch for any musty smell or marks.

Keep heavy things on low shelves, and never climb the shelves to reach the top.
