Wall beds for your home in Upper Clapton

About our wall beds in Upper Clapton

A wall bed, sometimes called a Murphy bed, lifts up into a cabinet during the day and comes down when it is time to sleep. It means a room can work as more than a bedroom, so a guest room can double as a study or playroom. We build the cabinet around the bed to suit the room and finish it to match. Typical reasons to get in touch are a flexible room for a growing family and a living room with a bed that folds away; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Homes in an area like Upper Clapton can come from many different periods, so a bedroom could have solid brick walls, lath and plaster, blockwork or plasterboard. Each wall is checked during the design visit before fixings are chosen. If the room has a chimney breast, the alcoves can take fitted storage; if not, a full wall often works best.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the wall bed and any storage.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

Preparing the room

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Advice

Upper Clapton homes and wall beds

Homes built before 1919 make up about 44% of the housing in the area around Upper Clapton, with about 17% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Upper Clapton, Historic England’s list includes White Lodge (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and Church of St Thomas (Grade II), under half a mile west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 21% of households in the streets around Upper Clapton, according to Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Living in a block of flats near Clapton station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Sutton House, about 1.5 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Practical tips

Looking after painted furniture is simple. These habits help most:

  • Let us know about the wall’s construction
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed
  • Think about how often the bed will be used

If the bed ever feels different when you lower or lift it, stop using it and get in touch. Don’t try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.

Consider how often the bed will be used and by whom. That helps decide its size and the mechanism, and whether a desk or shelves go around it.

Questions we are often asked

Is Upper Clapton in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes. Upper Clapton is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hackney and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Upper Clapton?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Will a wall bed work on my wall?

That’s something we look at when we measure. Different walls need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.

How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?

That depends on the size of the bed. We measure up and make sure the bed has room to fold down.

How much does a wall bed cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The bed size, the cabinet and any storage around it all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Pricing wall beds in Upper Clapton

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • How square the room is
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The width and height of the space
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Helping us understand the room

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

How it is made

Spray-painted finish

The colour is agreed with you before we spray.

Moisture-resistant MDF

On an external wall, moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice, alongside good ventilation.

Do you need wall beds in Upper Clapton?

The most common reason is a spare room that is rarely slept in. A bed fills the room whether anyone is using it or not, and a wall bed lets the room be used every day.

Here’s what wall beds can help with:

  • A real mattress for visitors
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests
  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • Shelves or a desk around the bed

For families living near Harrington Hill Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • A written quote that sets out the job
