Built-in bookshelves for homes in Biggin Hill

Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them. Walls in older houses are rarely flat, so we scribe the edges on site. Most enquiries start with somewhere to keep toys and books tidy and bare walls that could hold shelving, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Around Biggin Hill, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the main room is often well proportioned, with a bay, a chimney breast and not many other recesses. That leaves room for built-in bookshelves in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Do you cover homes near Woldingham station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Biggin Hill?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on, so it is worth checking before fitting day.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We’ll design around them.

Do built-in bookshelves have adjustable shelves?

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness to the bookcase, and adjustable ones let the spacing change. A mix often works best.

Can you build shelves over a doorway?

Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It makes good use of wall space that typically goes unused and can frame a window seat.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Biggin Hill

There is no set price, because there’s no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The internal fittings
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The overall size of the piece

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Helping us understand the room

These details help when you contact us:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Birch plywood carcasses make a rigid bookcase that fixes securely to the wall.

Plinths and scribe strips

Most period walls need scribing. It’s what makes shelving look part of the room.

Looking after your furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide
  • Let us know about parking and access at the measuring visit
  • Measure your tallest and deepest books

A soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is all painted shelves need. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, which can mark the paint.

Don’t block the space left for radiator heat with books or objects. Trapped heat isn’t good for the room or the books.

About 42% of the homes in the streets around Biggin Hill went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 29% between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. From workshop to your room

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
  3. Your written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The shelving is fitted, fixed and checked with you. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it is best to load the shelves gently at first.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

How to get a quote

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you contact us.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
