Built-in bookshelves in Hurlingham

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Hurlingham

Homes built before 1919 make up about 55% of the housing in the streets around Hurlingham, with about 26% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List has 36 entries within half a mile of the centre of Hurlingham. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. About 24% of households in the area around Hurlingham live in flats in converted or shared houses, the 2021 Census shows. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

For a flat near Imperial Wharf station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Close to Parsons Green (park)? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. Fulham Palace, about 0.7 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

The A304 runs close to Hurlingham; on busy main roads, unloading built-in bookshelves takes a little planning. Close by, we also work in Parsons Green (1 mile north), Walham Green (1 mile north-east), Chelsea Harbour (1 mile east), Sands End (1 mile east) and West Brompton (1 mile north). Across the rest of Hammersmith and Fulham, our area takes in Hammersmith (2 miles north-west), Shepherd's Bush (2 miles north), Brackenbury Village (2 miles north-west), White City (3 miles north), Brook Green (2 miles north-west) and College Park (4 miles north). As one of the bigger places in Hammersmith and Fulham, Hurlingham is covered for all of our fitted furniture.

Built-in bookshelves in Hurlingham: what you get

Shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves help brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing as your books change. We often mix the two, with fixed shelves where the bookcase needs strength. If you are living with books with nowhere left to go and bowing shelves in an old bookcase, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Rooms in houses from before 1919 tend to have generous ceiling heights, and around Hurlingham, a large share of homes are that age. Full-height built-in bookshelves can run up to the picture rail or the cornice, so the furniture looks as if it belongs to the house. Where a fireplace has been blocked up, the chimney still needs ventilating, and any damp is sorted before units go in.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the built-in bookcase we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

From workshop to your room

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

Starting with a design visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Is bespoke worth it?

With off-the-shelf shelving, you’re limited to the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, by spray or by hand. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Why work with us in Hurlingham

  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
  • Built around your room
  • Work across the whole of London
  • We visit, measure and go through the design before we quote

Read how bespoke compares with ready-made or what a quote should include.

Looking after your furniture

People planning built-in bookshelves often ask about these. They help before and after fitting:

  • Allow room for the collection to grow
  • Mention anything very heavy, like records or large art books
  • Note the sizes of your largest books and records
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need moving

Paint is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. At first, lift books onto the shelves rather than pushing them across, so the paint is not scuffed.

Do not load shelves beyond what they were planned for. If you plan to add a heavy collection later, say so at the measuring visit.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Hurlingham

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • How big the furniture is
  • How square the room is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What to send when you contact us

These details help when you contact us:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Hurlingham

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hurlingham?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

My house in Hurlingham is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.

Do you work in Hurlingham?

Yes. We cover Hurlingham and the rest of Hammersmith and Fulham, as part of our work across all London boroughs. To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.

Do you fit furniture for landlords?

Yes. Landlords and letting agents can arrange a design visit in the same way as anyone else. Access has to be agreed with the tenants.

How do I get a quote?

It is easiest to drop us a line using the contact form and let us know about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
