Wall beds in Whitton: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Whitton, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 56%) and before 1919 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List records 6 entries within half a mile of the centre of Whitton. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Richmond upon Thames is no exception. Where a street in Whitton is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

If you live near Crane Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.

Wall beds for homes in Whitton

A home office that doubles as a guest room is a common request. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, so the bed doesn’t dominate the working day. We can allow for cables to the desk, though any new sockets are for your electrician. If your home has more floor space in a studio flat and shelves or a desk around the bed, that is what wall beds are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the housing around Whitton, bedrooms typically have regular walls, a window on one side and sometimes a chimney breast. That makes a full wall of fitted furniture simple to plan, laid out around what you store. Where a loft conversion has been added, the sloping ceiling can take storage too.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room.
  2. The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. You receive a written quote.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home.

Preparing the room

Your questions about wall beds in Whitton

Do you make wall beds for homes in Whitton?

Yes, we work across Richmond upon Thames, Whitton included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Whitton?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How much space does a wall bed need?

That comes down to the size of the bed. At the design visit we measure the room and check there’s enough space in front.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

How long will the wall bed take to fit?

The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

When is bespoke worth it?

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

What it costs

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

Getting in touch

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:

  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

What prompts wall beds in Whitton

Sofa beds aren’t always comfortable for regular use. A wall bed takes a proper mattress, chosen to suit its mechanism, and the bed sits flat on its frame.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A hobby room with a bed for guests
  • A studio that works by day and night
  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • A proper bed instead of a sofa bed

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Brinsworth House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
