Bespoke kitchens in Brompton: local notes
About 69% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Brompton went up before 1919, and about 14% between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List has 438 entries within half a mile of the centre of Brompton. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Kensington and Chelsea included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Brompton is covered by it. Parking and access are planned at the measuring visit.
For a flat near London Victoria station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. For a family home near Hellenic College of London, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier. The wider area includes historic houses such as Carlyle's House, about 0.8 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

A larder cupboard can hold more than a run of wall units. A larder can have shelves, deep drawers and racks, planned around what you store. In an alcove or at the end of a run, it can use space that would otherwise be wasted. If your home has cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls and a kitchen finished in your colours, kitchens made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
A large share of the homes around Brompton were built before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the kitchen is often in the narrow rear part of the house, or in a side return that has since been extended. Cabinets are scribed to walls that wander and levelled on floors that slope. The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose.
We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Questions from Brompton
I live in a flat in Brompton. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in Brompton?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Will you connect the sink and appliances?
No. We’re carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets. Your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we plan the cabinets around their work.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Can I choose my own worktop and appliances?
The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose, and the cabinets are made to suit them. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
What materials do you use for kitchens?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.
When is bespoke worth it?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
Practical tips
The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:
- List what needs a home in the kitchen
- Share the layout with your other trades
- Mention any parking or lift rules
- Treat new paintwork gently at first
Let steam escape when you cook, as steam settling on cabinets over time isn’t good for any finish. Good ventilation helps paintwork last.
Choose your appliances before the design is finalised. We size the spaces around them, and changing them later can mean changing the units.

How it is made
Larder and dresser units
We build larders with shelves, drawers and door racks, made to the space.
Plinths and scribe strips
A plinth hides adjustable feet and lets the cabinets sit level. Scribe strips follow the wall.
From workshop to your room
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.
- You tell us about the kitchen and where it is in your home.
- At the design visit we measure the kitchen and the route in, including stairs, doorways and any lift. Let us know about parking too, as a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
- The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to come in through your doors.
- The cabinets are fitted in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish; plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.
Preparing the room
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance

How we price bespoke kitchens
What you pay depends on:
- How big the furniture is
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Parking near your home
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Before the design visit
Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:
- Your postcode and the borough
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
