Church End homes and fitted cupboards
Homes built before 1919 make up about 46% of the housing in the area around Church End, with about 27% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 4 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Church End. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. Where a home in Church End is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Mary, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. If you live in a flat close to Harlesden station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For families living near St Mary's CofE Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

How we make fitted cupboards for Church End
A utility or boot room has to work hard, every day. Tall cupboards can take the vacuum cleaner, ironing board and cleaning things, alongside spaces for the washing machine and dryer you choose. Plumbing is for your plumber and new sockets for your electrician, so we plan the cupboards around their work. Most enquiries start with hiding meters and a fuse board neatly and somewhere for coats, shoes and bags; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A large share of the homes around Church End were built before 1919, and older houses have lots of odd corners: the space under the stairs, the bay at the front, the alcoves, the hallway recesses and, where the loft has been converted, the eaves. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful.
You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
What affects the cost of fitted cupboards
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- The overall size of the piece
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- The number of doors and drawers
- The internal fittings
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
Before the design visit
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:
- Examples of the look you are after
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
To get a quote for fitted cupboards in Church End, message us from the contact page. Let us know the room and the rough idea. Next comes a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.
From workshop to your room
You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You let us know where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold, including anything tricky like a boiler or meter.
- We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
- We build the cupboards in our workshop.
- Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room.
Before fitting day
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
Ask for a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Advice
Caring for painted furniture
People planning fitted cupboards often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Point out anything that needs access
- Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
- Keep boiler vents and meter access clear
- Make sure walls are dry before we fit
A boiler cupboard should be left as it was designed, with nothing stored against the boiler or over its vents. When the boiler is serviced, the engineer can open the doors fully to get to it.
If there’s damp on a wall, have it sorted before we fit. A cupboard on a damp wall can trap moisture, particularly on a colder external wall. Ventilation inside the cupboard helps too.
Your questions about fitted cupboards in Church End
Can you fit fitted cupboards to the uneven walls of an older house in Church End?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Harlesden station?
Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Does my lease affect fitted furniture?
Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.

When is bespoke worth it?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
