Fitted cupboards for your home in Kilburn
FAQs: fitted cupboards in Kilburn
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
My home in Kilburn is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Fitted cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?
Yes. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and levelled with a plinth or adjustable feet. That’s one of the main reasons to choose fitted cupboards in an older house.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
About our fitted cupboards in Kilburn
Few walls in an older house are truly straight, and floors often slope. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall, then set level on adjustable feet or a plinth. We work around skirting, coving and picture rails, so the cupboard sits comfortably in the room. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are cupboards for a utility or boot room and tall cupboards where space is short.
A large share of the homes around Kilburn were built before 1919, and houses of that age are full of tricky spaces: the space under the stairs, the bay at the front, the alcoves, the hallway recesses and, where the loft has been converted, the eaves. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful, scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

What we do not do
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Connecting appliances to water or waste
- Any gas work around the boiler
- Building work or structural changes

Is bespoke worth it?
Neither choice is right for every home. For a square alcove and a tight budget, a ready-made unit may do the job. For tricky spaces, period rooms or a built-in look, a fitted cupboard tends to earn its place. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Do you need fitted cupboards in Kilburn?
When a house gains a utility or boot room, people want it fitted out properly. Washing machines, dryers, coats, boots and cleaning things all need a place, and fitted cupboards can bring order to them.
People typically get in touch with us about things like these:
- Built-in storage that matches the woodwork
- Cupboards for a utility or boot room
- Landing shelves for bedding and towels
- Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Augustine, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What it is made from
Spray-painted finish
We spray paint in the workshop for a smooth, factory-like finish. You choose the colour.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF gives a smooth surface for a painted finish, and the moisture-resistant grade suits damper rooms.
From workshop to your room
In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it’s useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Winfield House, about 1.7 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.
