Fitted cupboards for homes in Cranbrook

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Cranbrook were built before 1919 (about 66%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 18%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Cranbrook include Valentines Mansion (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north, and Chapel (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Redbridge sets its own rules. If your road in Cranbrook falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Tell us what the parking is like at the measuring visit.

For a flat near Ilford station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If you live near Valentines Park, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Fitted cupboards in Cranbrook: what you get

A utility or boot room has to work hard, every day. Tall cupboards can take the vacuum cleaner, ironing board and cleaning things, alongside spaces for the washing machine and dryer you choose. Your plumber connects the appliances and your electrician handles any sockets, so we plan the cupboards around their work. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are making use of an awkward alcove or corner and a linen cupboard on the landing.

With a large share of homes around Cranbrook built before 1919, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What happens on fitting day

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Starting with a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

You can put together a flat-pack cupboard yourself, and that is a real advantage. A fitted cupboard needs a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, and in return the cupboard is built for your home. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings, with panels and details to suit the house.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

What you get with us

Is it time for fitted cupboards?

Some people want to hide a boiler, meter or fuse board. They’re rarely attractive, but they need to stay accessible, so a cupboard has to be designed around them. We plan the doors, panels and ventilation with that in mind.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat
  • Cupboards for a utility or boot room
  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner
  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access

For a family home near The Ursuline Academy Ilford, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

Looking after your furniture

Getting the most from fitted cupboards starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Think about how the cupboards will get in
  • Think about what each cupboard will hold
  • Don’t store things against the boiler

Keep the boiler cupboard clear inside, and do not block the ventilation. When the boiler is serviced, the engineer can open the doors fully to get to it.

Keep boilers, meters and fuse boards in mind from the start. They shape the design, and planning around them is much easier than changing things later.

Questions we are often asked

Do you cover homes near Ilford station?

Yes, homes across Redbridge and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Cranbrook?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and make sure an engineer can reach it.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

What are your cupboards made from?

MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for shelves and drawer boxes. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colour agreed with you.
