Caring for painted furniture

People planning fitted cupboards often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Tell us about meters and boilers in the space
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Deal with any damp walls first

Meter and fuse board cupboards work best when they stay easy to open. Try not to fill the space in front of them, so engineers and meter readers can get to them quickly.

Any damp should be dealt with before furniture goes against a wall. Damp behind a cupboard can lead to mould, and external walls can be colder than internal ones. We can allow for ventilation where it is needed.

Fitted cupboards in Goodmayes

We make our cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on what each part needs to do. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is good for long shelves. The finish is either spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. People normally come to us about boxing in a boiler with room for servicing and a cupboard for the meters with easy access; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Goodmayes, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls during the design visit.

Materials and finishes

Shelves

Shelves are spaced to suit what goes on them, whether that is linen or cleaning things. Long spans need a thicker shelf or a support.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a softer, traditional look that suits period homes. The colour is agreed with you.

Questions we are often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Goodmayes?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Goodmayes?

Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London, and Goodmayes is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

What are your cupboards made from?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

What happens when you come to measure?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

What do fitted cupboards cost?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The size, the inside layout and the finish all make a difference. For a design visit, message us from the contact page.

How fitting day works

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and note the clearances and ventilation the boiler manufacturer asks for.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with vents and access panels where they’re needed.
  5. The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.

How to prepare

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand

Advice

Pricing fitted cupboards in Goodmayes

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The width and height of the space
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Getting in touch

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • How you want to use the space
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, fill in our short enquiry form.
